How did everyone fair the Ice Storm?

Ok sorry folks but Ford is an idiot. I just saw him on tv saying "if" the province wants to help we will accept. You bloody fool!!! You need to call in the army and Hydro crews from other provinces if you want to get things back to normal anytime soon.

When this happened here in 98 it was much worse and we had crews from all over even the northern states. We also sent crews down to Vermont and New Hampshire.

Reign in your ego and get help, you fool. Just wait until some poor idiot dies from trying to heat up his house with a BBQ.

Friday night I went to a Christmas party, got mildly intoxicated and slipped in my friends driveway, smashing my iPhone.
Came home next day with my power out Came back on sometime in the middle of the night.

Asking Santa for a new phone now.

I hope those affected by the storm have alternate places they can crash at. I know 2 friends of mine in Toronto have opened their places to anyone that has no power. I can't imagine being in the cold and dark for so long. This close to Christmas just really sucks.

I didn't want to get political on this but Patty started! lol Seriously though, if anything constitutes a state of emergency it's this. Hundreds of thousands without power in the dark and cold. I believe New York declared a State of emergency (or maybe New England??) Anyways I hope that our politicians can put pride aside and do right for the people affected by this storm.

this is NOT an emergency. There are some trees downs and the 75% of the city has power. People are holiday shopping today. How do you justify an emergency when most of the people are having a normal day.

Patty, I had read that previous to posting earlier - wonder what 'finally' you are referring to, just that the premier spoke to the deputy mayor?

Tara - I would think reports from the hydro companies, etc. all go into helping decide about a declaration - so it's not all necessarily political.

It seems they feel they are getting enough assistance - e.g. TO Hydro saying they are in discussions to get aid from US, since they helped with hurricane Sandy relief.

Water pumping stations and some hospitals have power back after being on emergency generators.

I don't live in Ontario but agree outside help should be brought in to restore power and remove debris (tree branches etc). Especially for elderly and disabled who have no power, heat etc. Let's hope things get rolling very soon. Hope everything improves soon for those out east.

We were without hydro from 10:30 yesterday morning to 8:30 last night. We were without water til this afternoon because the neighbour we get our water from didn`t get power til then.

frugal I would respectfully disagree with you. When 215,000 people are STILL without power and heat in the middle of winter and will remain that way for a minimum of 2 more days, it's an emergency. I'm extremely thankful that you aren't being affected by the storm but there are hundreds of thousands of people that are.


Natalka, does it make sense to take help from the US rather than your own Province? Not really. Why be in talks with another country when your own province will help you?

Either way I do hope that those needing help in Toronto have someone to assist them.

If I were freezing in my home right now without heat and power I wouldn't give a hot DA*M where help was coming from, just that it comes and the sooner the better!
I hope neighbours are checking on the elderly in their areas....some may not know where to go for help, nor have transportation available to them!

I think my problem is (oh I have many haha) while we shouldn't make this situation out to be more than it is, we also shouldn't downplay it. Just because we things are great for us (general use of the term) doesn't mean it is for many more people. As Lynn said I do hope neighbours are checking in on eachother.

Yes yes!! That's what I mean.

Also, Toronto can't really declare a state of emergency it wouldn't work according to the guy I saw on CTV national . It would be up to the municipalities to declare a state of emergency thus releasing funds and manpower.

I think 250,000 is pretty much an emergency. When residential streets are impassable then yes it's an emergency. 1st responders need to be able to navigate when people start calling in from suffering from the cold or worse yet burning crap in their house that they should not.

What's sad is people stay in their houses even though they can get shelter elsewhere because they are worried about vandalism
