(I must admit that I really don't understand this all... but this blew up big yesterday. The Right Sector are ultranationalists, possibility that this situation was mafia-esque?)

    July 11
Shootout in western Ukraine kills at least two people; risk of wider conflict exists

The shootout involving Right Sector insurgents, a local power group and Ukrainian police took place in Mukacheve, a Zakarpatya Oblast city, killing at least two people.

The chaotic shooting, located less than an hour away from Hungary, occurred around 2 p.m., and injured at least 11 more people.

“A major tragedy occurred in Mukachevo today. A group of 15-20! people arrived at the location which had to do with the Ukraine’s member of parliament that had sobering experience from the 90’s – Mykhaylo Lanyo,” wrote Anton Gerashchenko, an adviser to the Interior Ministry

Prosecutors in Zakarpatya Oblast say that there were 20 people dressed in camouflage suits with signs of Right Sector on their clothes and vehicles. It says that the Right Sector members were meeting with some locals in a café to redistribute power.

“After this the mentioned individuals… began the shooting,” the prosecutor reports.
The local police, the report says, then came to the scene and blocked the entrance to the café after which the armed individuals opened fire at the police using such weapons as rocket-propelled grenade launchers and Kalashnykov automatic rifles. The remaining shooters were hiding in a forest plantation.

Right Sector withdraws from front as conflict with government escalates

A National Guard serviceman controls vehicles at a road block in the village of Lavky, near the small Ukrainian town of Mukacheve, Transcarpathia district

The Right Sector said on July 12 it was withdrawing its fighters from the war zone as the tense standoff between the nationalist group and the authorities escalated.

The Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) demanded that a group of armed Right Sector activists near the city of Mukacheve in Zakarpattya Oblast lay down their weapons. The SBU said it would start arresting the activists if they refused to be disarmed.

Observers have linked the conflict to cigarette smuggling in Zakarpattya Oblast, while the Right Sector describes the standoff as part of the government’s crackdown on volunteer units.

The developments followed a shootout between Right Sector members on the one hand and police and security guards of lawmaker Mikhailo Lanyo, an ex-member of ousted President Viktor Yanukovych’s Party of Regions, on the other hand in Mukacheve on July 11.

The Right Sector says the conflict was initiated by Lanyo’s people and the police, while the authorities argue the right-wing group shot first.

Right Sector leader Dmytro Yarosh arrived in Mukacheve on the same day in an effort to settle the conflict. President Petro Poroshenko, SBU Chief Vasyl Hrytsak and Interior Minister Arsen Avakov are currently holding negotiations with Yarosh

PM to welcome Ukrainian Prime Minister Arseniy Yatsenyuk to Canada

Arseniy Yatsenyuk, Prime Minister of Ukraine, will visit Canada on July 14, 2015. Prime Minister Yatsenyuk’s bilateral visit to Canada – his first since taking office in 2014 – will provide an opportunity for the leaders to reaffirm the close relationship between Canada and Ukraine and discuss ways to further broaden its scope. Discussions between the two leaders will focus on the Putin regime's illegal occupation of Crimea, and on ways to create jobs and strengthen economic relations between Canada and Ukraine, amid global economic volatility.

The two leaders will also discuss the Government of Ukraine’s progress in implementing its economic and governance reform agenda, in the face of Russia’s ongoing occupation of Crimea and the military and financial support it is providing to insurgents in Eastern Ukraine.

“As the world faces increasing global economic volatility and security threats, I look forward to welcoming Prime Minister Arseniy Yatsenyuk for his first official visit to Canada to discuss efforts to grow our economies and bolster the security of Ukraine against the Putin regime's ongoing aggression.” – Prime Minister Stephen Harper

(this is so bizarre, like something from decades ago...)

Russian poet sentenced over poem in support of Ukraine

A Russian court has convicted poet and teacher Alexander Byvshev of ‘inciting enmity’ and sentenced him to 6 months community service, confiscated his computer and prohibited him from working as a school teacher for two years. His ‘crime’ – the poem ‘To Ukrainian Patriots’ in which he expresses his opposition to Russia’s annexation of Crimea and suggests Ukrainians should ensure that not one inch of Crimea is handed “to Putin’s chekists”.

A month ago Byvshev was also added to Russia’s ‘List of Terrorists and Extremists’, with this resulting in all accounts being frozen. Over the last month Byvshev’s flat has also come under attack twice, with windows broken both on June 14 and during the early hours of July 12.

Byvshev posted his poem ‘To Ukrainian patriots’ on his social network pages on March 1, 2014, 2 days after Russian soldiers without insignia seized control in Crimea.

Another criminal case was initiated against Byvshev on June 19 over the poem ‘Ukrainian insurgents’. This coincided with a search of his home with his laptop and memory drives being taken away.

This court trial and verdict are clearly aimed at sending a warning to other Russians to keep their heads low. They are chillingly reminiscent of some of the worst methods used in Soviet times.

    Canada’s Sen. Andreychuk elected co-chair
    of Ukraine-NATO Interparliamentary Council

OTTAWA – Raynell Andreychuk, senator for Saskatchewan, has been elected as co-chair of the Ukraine-NATO Interparliamentary Council (UNIC) of the NATO Parliamentary Assembly.

“I am honored to have been entrusted with this responsibility by the NATO Parliamentary Association,” said Sen. Andreychuk. “Amid growing public support for Euro-Atlantic integration within Ukrainian society, and as Ukraine continues in its development as an independent and sovereign democracy, the Ukraine-NATO Interparliamentary Council provides a critical forum for building trust and understanding between Ukrainian parliamentarians and their counterparts throughout the Atlantic Alliance.”

Sen. Andreychuk and Verkhovna Rada First Vice-Chair Andriy Parubiy co-chaired UNIC’s most recent meeting on June 8.

The UNIC co-chairs adopted a statement reaffirming parliamentarians’ ongoing support for Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, and underlining the NATO Parliamentary Assembly’s solidarity with Ukraine and its support for Ukraine’s reform process.

Prime Minister Stephen Harper meets with Ukrainian Prime Minister Arseniy Yatsenyuk
at Willson house in Chelsea, Que., Tuesday, July 14

    Canada-Ukraine trade deal announced

Ukrainian Prime Minister Arseniy Yatsenyuk and Prime Minister Stephen Harper announced the deal Tuesday during Yatsenyuk's visit to the Quebec hamlet of Chelsea. Yatsenyuk met with Harper, whose summer residence is at nearby Harrington Lake. Yatsenyuk is on a visit to the U.S. and will head to Britain after his stop in Canada.

The deal will see Canada eliminate duties on 99.9 per cent of imports from Ukraine, while Ukraine will end duties on 86 per cent of imports from Canada, according to a news release. The Ukraine tariffs will come off Canadian industrial goods, forestry and wood products, and fish and seafood products, as well as the vast majority of agricultural products.

Canadian agriculture exporters will get duty-free access for beef, pulses, grains, canola oil, processed foods and animal feed, the release said. Canadian pork producers will be able to export more frozen pork to Ukraine without the country applying tariffs.

The government expects Canada's exports to Ukraine to increase by $41.2 million and Ukraine exports to Canada to increase by $23.7 million, mostly in textile, apparel and metal products.

Although Canada's trade with Ukraine is modest — it was worth $244 million last year, down from $322 million the year before — observers say the deal will be an important political gesture, sending a message of confidence in the reforms being undertaken by the government of Ukraine's president, Petro Poroshenko.

    http://www.cbc.ca/news/politics/canada-ukraine-trade-deal-announced-by-arseniy-yatsenyuk-stephen-harper-1.3149875

The trade deal Canada has clinched with Ukraine represents more of a gesture of solidarity than a commercial breakthrough as beleaguered Kiev struggles with pro-Russian separatists, crippling government debt and an economy expected to shrink by as much as 9 per cent this year.

It is another measure for Ukraine, the ancestral homeland of more than one million Canadians, from a Conservative government that has made aid and support for Kiev one of its top foreign policies in the past 18 months.
