Canadian techs train Ukrainian soldiers in the art of bomb disposal


YAVORIV, Ukraine - Canadian bomb disposal troops are instructing Ukrainian troops over the next couple of weeks on how to better deal with the growing menace of improvised explosives in the eastern part of the war-torn country.

The soldiers, from the 4th Engineering Support Regiment, based in Gagetown, N.B., are in Yavoriv, Ukraine to impart skills hard-won in the over decade-long Afghan war.

In total, there are 15 Canadians involved in an annual 17-nation exercise, known as Saber Guardian/Rapid Trident 15, which is separate from the soon-to-be launched combat training mission.

Gen. Jonathan Vance, in a recent interview with The Canadian Press, suggested it would be September before the two-year long deployment of trainers, which was announced in April, gets fully underway.

Detecting and dismantling bombs will be a key part of that effort to bolster Ukraine's hard-pressed national guard, which has suffered horrific casualties from both roadside bombs and artillery.

Defence Minister Jason Kenney issued a statement that says the aim is to support Canada's allies in the region while helping to strengthen Ukraine’s resilience and its ability to protect its territorial integrity.

Moscow has warned that US-led military exercises in western Ukraine that began this week may have 'explosive consequences' and threaten to derail the peace process in the separatist east.


Ukrainian and U.S. troops launched fresh drills involving 1,800 soldiers from 18 countries today, aimed at bolstering the morale of the armed forces amid an ongoing 15-month conflict with pro-Russian separatists.

'The military drills involving NATO members and Ukraine's army that started in Lviv region under U.S. command are a clear demonstration of NATO's provocative policy to unequivocally support the policies of current Kiev authorities in eastern Ukraine,' the foreign ministry said in a statement.

The annual Rapid Trident exercises involve 1,800 soldiers from 18 countries and last for just under two weeks.
Their immediate aim is to build morale and cohesion within the ex-Soviet state's outdated and underfunded armed forces.


'These joint manoeuvres... display a broad support for Ukraine in its struggle for freedom and sovereignty,' Ukrainian forces commander Oleksandr Syvak told the festive flag-raising ceremony.
His U.S. counterpart Alfred Renzi said the participating countries - most of them NATO members but also including such former Soviet nations as Moldova and Azerbaijan - 'will prove an ability to cooperate as one unified force for stability.'

Canadian Armed Forces contribute expertise to multinational exercise in Ukraine

OTTAWA – Fifteen members of the Canadian Armed Forces are participating in Exercise SABER GUARDIAN / RAPID TRIDENT 15, a multinational exercise at the International Peacekeeping and Security Centre in Yavoriv, Ukraine, from July 17 to 31, 2015.

Exercise SABER GUARDIAN / RAPID TRIDENT 15 is designed to support allied and partner nations and focuses on improving stability and peace support operations in Central and Eastern Europe. In addition to Canada, exercise participants include Belgium, Bulgaria, Estonia, Georgia, Germany, Latvia, Lithuania, Moldova, Norway, Poland, Romania, Spain, Turkey, Ukraine, the United Kingdom, and the United States.

• Canadian Army personnel will use expertise in Counter Improvised Explosive Device (C-IED) operations gained through experience in Afghanistan to contribute to SABER GUARDIAN / RAPID TRIDENT 15.
• Nine Canadian Army C-IED instructors from 4 Engineer Support Regiment, supported by a medic from the Canadian Forces Health Services Group, will hone the skills and knowledge of participating soldiers’ C-IED methods and techniques in support of stability operations.
• In partnership with several other nations, four officers and one non-commissioned member from the Canadian Army Headquarters and 5th Canadian Division Headquarters are occupying staff positions in the exercise’s Multinational Brigade Headquarters and Exercise Control Group. They are providing mentorship and support to Ukrainian officers in command positions.

Russian proxies do not allow Red Cross humanitarian aid entering Donetsk



Representatives of the self-proclaimed Donetsk People's Republic (DPR) have barred, from Donetsk, 16 humanitarian trucks of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), the press service of the Ukrainian State Border Service has reported.
"Sixteen humanitarian trucks of the International Committee of the Red Cross passed through the Buhas checkpoint yesterday. Yet those trucks were banned by representatives of the illegal armed units on the territory which is not controlled by Ukraine allegedly due to the lack of certain permits," the report said.
According to the State Border Service, the trucks were carrying 255 tonnes of food, hygienic items and construction materials to people in the Donetsk region.

A young Ukrainian singer, Mykola Hordiychuk, aka “Hryzun” (rodent), died yesterday during a combat mission in the ATO zone. 29 years old.

Mykola served in the special patrol battalion Harpoon, which carried out reconnaissance and anti-sabotage missions.
Mykola stepped on a mine near Avdiyivka. He died on the way to hospital; another soldier is in coma, two were slightly injured.

Mykola was an active member of Plast, an activist in Kamianets-Podilsky; he sang with two bands – Svoyeridne and DenDi; he was a member of the 15th Self Defense Maidan Corps during the Revolution of Dignity. When war broke out in the east, Mykola was one of the first to volunteer.

July 23, 2015 in the village plow Zolochiv district (Lviv region) people kneeling met Vitali Shafranska, who gave his life protecting Ukraine from the Russian-terrorist forces in the east.
