Russia promises to fine and return abducted Ukrainian paratroopers

Three Ukrainian soldiers from the 79th separate airmobile brigade, who were detained by the Russian border guards near Syvash Lake in Crimea, may soon return to Ukraine, according to the report of the Russian Federal Security Service, Ukrainian news service TSN has reported.

According to the report, Russia has promised to punish Ukrainian soldiers with a fine for violation of the rules of crossing the state border.


In turn, Ukraine is ready to take the soldiers, but disagrees with the prosecution, because Crimea is officially the Ukrainian territory, though temporarily occupied.


As UNIAN reported earlier, the press service of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine reported on Facebook that three soldiers from 79th separate airmobile brigade went missing in the early hours of September 5 near the administrative border with the Russian-occupied territory of Crimea.

UNICEF and LEGO Foundation provide conflict-affected children
a chance to play and learn



UNICEF and the LEGO Foundation launched a local initiative to provide conflict-affected children in the Donetsk and Luhansk regions of Ukraine with high quality play materials to continue their development and learning. Children in 48 schools, 62 kindergartens, and 10 Community Protection Centres located in government-controlled areas will benefit from this initiative.

“Children’s right to play is stipulated in the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child. It is fundamental to quality early learning and cognitive development, as well as to help conflict-affected children cope with stress and trauma,” said Giovanna Barberis, UNICEF Representative in Ukraine. "This partnership with the LEGO Foundation enables UNICEF to provide a chance to play and learn to over 18,000 conflict-affected children”.

Children are paying the highest price in the humanitarian crisis that continues to worsen in Ukraine. As a result of the extended violence, children have been suffering enormous levels of stress, having witnessed violent fighting and shelling. At least 178,000 children have been forced to flee their homes and displaced within Ukraine. Thousands of conflict-affected children in eastern Ukraine do not have access to education. Didactic materials, books, and particularly games, which engage children in learning through play, are limited.
In the midst of violence and instability, playing and education help to alleviate trauma for conflict-affected children.

In Ukraine, over 1,600 LEGO Charity Boxes will be donated to support play and early childhood development opportunities to over 18,000 children in Donetsk and Luhansk oblasts. In addition, over 500 educators and caregivers will be taught to understand and use play as a tool for children’s stimulation and learning.

Hasidic pilgrims donate for Ukrainian soldiers



Hasidic pilgrims who arrived in the city of Uman, Cherkasy Oblast, to celebrate Rosh Hashanah have donated UAH 300,000 (18,244 CAD) for the needs of Ukrainian soldiers from the area who are taking part in the antiterrorist operation (ATO) in eastern Ukraine, Oleksandr Tsebriy, the acting chairman of the Uman city council reported on his Facebook.


“I want to thank the Hasidic pilgrims for their substantial donation in the amount of UAH 300,000 to the trust account at the Executive Committee of the City Council to help our soldiers who are defending the sovereignty and integrity of our country in the ATO zone,” he wrote.


This year the Jewish New Year — Rosh Hashanah — is celebrated September 14-15. Hasidic pilgrims come to Uman for this celebration from all over the world


According to the Uman city council, approximately 12,000 Hasidic pilgrims arrived in Uman as of September 10. Some 27,000 pilgrims from 24 countries, primarily from Israel and the US, are expected.

Rosh Hashana has been traditionally celebrated in Uman, the burial place of Rabbi Nachman (1772-1810), the spiritual father of the Bratslav Hasidic movement.
