My good friend called me last night to tell me that she has been diagnosed with cancer of the esophagus. She was admitted to the hospital 4 weeks before Christmas because she had trouble breathing and had mega pain in her stomach. While she was there undergoing x-rays the docs discovered a mass in her lower neck/upper chest area. Fortunately, the cancer hasnt spread anywhere else and she starts chemo on Jan 12th and then radiation.
But here`s the kicker! Her sister-in-law, who is also a good friend of mine, was diagnosed with lung cancer at the same time. Unfortunately her`s has spread and she has lesions in the brain. She starts chemo on Jan 19th. Devastating news to start the year off. This thread is currently associated with: N/A

I'm so sorry to hear your friends are sick. What a way to start to start the year. The best thing you can do is be there for them. If you are strong enough be their crutch. If they dont need you at the moment as long as they know youare there if need be can be a relief.

It still amazes me to this day how heavy smokers can't understand the correlation between lung cancer and smoking! I'm sorry for your friend of course, Snow, but jeepers...it makes me sad to know that people can do this to themselves. Okay, no pies tossed, please, I know that non-smokers can get lung cancer, too, and I know how hard it is to quit, I did it, my DH did it, and our DD and SIL both did it, too, and we did it because of our health!!
I hope both your friends pull out of this, Snow, and that this is the final straw for smoking for your friend and she quits for good...for her good, and the good of her family and those who love her.

I know what you mean. I woman I used to work with had lung cancer, had the lung removed, went into remission, and continued to smoke like a chimney, then it can back into her other lung and has since passed away. She was only in her 50's and left behind kids and grand kids.

there are stage 3 lung cancer patients who still continue to smoke right up to their deaths, I know two women in their 50's who both smoke like chimneys, defying the odds..... yet one of them were warned of emphysema.
