As of Jan. 1, the Ontario government requires all insurers to offer a discount for motorists who have approved snow or winter tires. Although about 20 of the 50 companies already offered the benefit, the rest are being forced into the fold.
But some firms are playing hard ball with the province’s attempt to lower the cost of the most expensive premiums in Canada. (The new rules are also a measure to encourage safer driving in winter, which is a good thing on our slippery freeze-thaw roads.)
The catch is that while the discount must be introduced in 2016, insurers can choose when. They can give it to you mid-policy if you ask, or only when you renew.
For example, the two big bank-owned insurers, TD Insurance Meloche Monnex and RBC Insurance, are among those requiring you to wait for a policy renewal.
