if the lady was so hungry then why didn't the other person take the wrapper from the sandwhich to the cashier..explain situation...pregnant, feeling a little dizzy, whatever. pay for it..get reciept and then show reciept when going through with their groceries, so easy and probally would have avoided all of this.

Really, it doesn't belong to you until you pay for it. If it's in your stomach and you haven't paid yet....then technically you have stolen it even if you do plan to pay later. (Just playing devil's advocate here.) Eat it after you own it...
BTW....I don't eat stuff in stores...and after reading about this lady its not something I will ever be doing!

Well I imagine they made their point very clear that shoplifting will not be tolerated in the store and the amount of missing stock will be greatly reduced now

I just find their story plausable since common sense dictates why would a thief pay for groceries but try to steal $5 worth of sandwiches?
Do people pay before they eat at a restaurant? I think this was blown right out of orbit by the store. I dont eat while shopping but a lot of people do. Shoplifting is shoplifting but in this case, it seems they could have just got the money from the couple and not made such a huge stink about it.
I know there are a lot of stories and a lot of lies from thieves but there are also people who make honest mistakes and considering they already bought $50 in groceries, seems more likely they are telling the truth IMO.

i don't see why there is such outrage that a thread was started to draw attention the story.

I know, I worked as a manager for 10 yrs in retail and that does happen, but SANDWICHES? With the wrappers in the cart? Those are terrible thieves if that's the case. If I was trying to shoplift, I'd make sure it was worth it, not getting caught over $5 in sandwiches. I would stuff $20 steaks down my pants, or a juicy rack of lamb (I dont steal BTW just using this as an example)

Yep, lots of people dont just go in steal a few things and leave, the also make legit purchases too. So all in all, lots of people go in and steal $5 worth of stuff and pay for real purchases too.
As for this particular story, on the pregnant women I'm sure the full story hasn't been told.

If she really did have the wrappers, its only her word with no response from the store in the media

Safeway Drops Theft Charges Against Pregnant Woman
November 2, 2011 9:00 AM Boomer Health and Lifestyle website
The Safeway grocery store in Honolulu that came under fire last week for arresting a couple for not paying for two sandwiches said it would drop charges against the pregnant woman and her husband. According to UPI, Nicole Leszczynski and her husband were arrested after eating the sandwiches while shopping, causing their three-year-old daughter to be placed with Child Protective Services.
Leszczynski said she made an honest mistake in not paying for the five-dollar sandwiches, telling reporters she simply forgot. She said store management wouldn’t allow her to pay for the food after she paid for her groceries and exited the store.
“It was a complete accident that turned out to have difficult consequences,” Leszczynski told Hawaii News Now on Tuesday.
She was particularly upset over what happened to her daughter during the ordeal, adding that it was “kind of harsh to go to jail and have your daughter removed from your care for something like this.”
UPI reported that news of the arrests quickly went national, inciting outrage and leading Safeway president of Northern California operations Karl Shroeder to personally call Leszczynski to apologize. The company agreed to drop the charges, saying in a statement that “it appears we may not have handled this matter in the best possible way.”
