To mark Queen Elizabeth’s 90th birthday, a new story has been released about a beloved children’s book character who, as it happens, also turns 90 years old this year: Winnie-the-Pooh.
The adorable tale “Winnie-the-Pooh and the Royal Birthday” picks up the same cast of characters first brought to life by A.A. Milne in 1926. There’s Pooh, of course, and Piglet, and Eyore, and Owl, and Kanga, and even Christopher Robin, who isn’t the only boy to show up in the book.
After Christopher Robin—“who knew a great deal about far away places like the other side of the Forest and London”—informs his friends in the Hundred Acre Wood of the Queen’s upcoming birthday, they decide to bring her a present: a red balloon. And so, the group travels to London to deliver the gift. When they finally meet the Queen they find her with a most unusual companion.
So what did Pooh and his friends think of their big moment with their country's monarch? She was "just as Queenly and smiley and wonderful as they had expected her to be." And, after meeting her, Pooh came to one very important conclusion: “It must be a very great thing to be ninety years old."

Queen Elizabeth on Vanity Fair cover
To mark her 90th birthday, Queen Elizabeth II sat for a series of portraits by Vanity Fair contributing photographer Annie Leibovitz. The resulting portfolio—which includes two photos exclusive to Vanity Fair—captures the Queen in the intimate, familiar setting of her home at Windsor Castle.
“The most moving, important thing about this shoot is that these were all her ideas,” says Leibovitz. “She wanted to be photographed with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren; her husband, Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh; her daughter, Anne, the Princess Royal; and her corgis. I was told how relaxed she was at Windsor, and it was really true. You get the sense of how at peace she was with herself, and very much enthralled with her family.”
In addition to the portfolio and an accompanying appreciation of the Queen’s lifetime’s worth of portraits by Laura Jacobs, the issue includes reminiscences by royal biographer William Shawcross and other Vanity Fair contributors, and a report from Michael Joseph Gross on her beloved corgis.

Her Majesty delighted well-wishers in London today during a speech to mark her official 90th birthday.
The monarch thanked everyone for their 'support and encouragement', before praising Britain's charities for their tireless work.
Introducing his grandmother to the stage, Prince William thanked the monarch on behalf of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren and said 'Granny - thank you for everything you've done for your family'.
He said: 'Catherine, Harry and I and the rest of our family are extremely proud to be here today. My family has had plenty of reason to celebrate since the Queen turned 90 in April.
'The Queen's strong health and relentless energy; her sharp wit and famous sense of humour; and the fact that the Queen remains very much at the helm of our family, our nation and the Commonwealth.
'She is the one head of state that world leaders can turn to for a first hand perspective of the arch of history over the last six decades.
'At 90 she is the leader of our country who we all look up to in good times and in challenging moments to set an example and to guide the way ahead.'
He added: 'I say a personal thank you to the Queen on behalf of all of her grandchildren and great grandchildren. Thank you for everything you have done for our family we could not wish you a happier birthday.'
Earlier, William praised the crowd for braving the weather and ensuring a good time was had by all.
He said: 'Thank you so much for showing that the Great British public doesn't let an little rain spoil a good day out. It means so much to see everybody here today.
