A friend of mine is moving to an apartment that doesn't have a hood above the stove. I thought ventilation above a stove would be required, but I'm having trouble finding any information about it. I've looked through the Ontario Building Code and didn't have any luck. Does anyone know if it's required or where else I might look?
It's an electric stove, not gas, if that helps.

It might be easier to call someone than to wade through all the regulations, just a thought.

We don't have a rangehood, either. I think it might be a newer requirement - so wouldn't be applicable to older places.

We don't have a range hood either. For some reason the builders put the stove on the wall that doesn't have easy access to vent it outside. It's a shame because some of the spice jars on the shelf above it harden up.

I don't have one in my apartment either. There is a ventilation fan in the kitchen ceiling though.

Goodness, in the "olden days", no one had a vent hood!!

Of course nowadays it's not considered a luxury anymore, but I don't think it's a requirement for a normal residential apartment. If you're concerned you can purchase a re-circulating vent hood.

Best bet, phone the Ministry in Ontario to find out for certain:
