I have never had a problem.

I've gotten Sobey's GCs as gifts (as recently as last month) and went in and bought Amazon, Best Buy, and Tim Horton's cards with it.

Years ago, they also used to allow redeeming AirMiles for GC's at Sobeys. That stopped when AM had some fraud breach of some sort. Not that the instances were related, but a lot of possible uses for AM stopped, and a few were re-instated, but a few weren't. That was one of them.
