I think this will be an eye opener to all those who have had breast cancer, donate etc. This looks like a great documentary!
Starting this Friday, February 3, watch Pink Ribbons, Inc. in a theatre near youEach year, millions of dollars are raised in the name of breast cancer. But where does this money go, and what does it actually achieve? Acclaimed filmmaker Léa Pool explores the darker side of the ribbon with this feature documentary that shows how the devastating reality of breast cancer has been hijacked by a shiny, pink story of success.

I'm very leery about buying "Pink Ribbon" branded goods.
I was looking at snow brushes for our cars and the PR one was $5 more expensive and 6 inches shorter than than the normal one. The company was going to donate $1 for each PB brush sold....
So I'll give my extra bucks directly TYVM!
eta...and those stupid FB "games".....save me from them.....Last edited by Darth Penguin; Wed, Feb 1st, 2012 at 08:40 PM. Reason: eta

That does look interesting. I've never actually bought anything with a pink ribbon on it. I find the whole thing kind of tacky. That doesn't mean I wouldn't support someone with breast cancer. I just don't want logos and pink stuff all over my house.

This looks extremely interesting. I'd be keen to see how the doc. unfolds and what we learn.

My daughter did a university project on this for one of her marketing classes and she was horrified when she discovered that a mere pittance actually goes to breast cancer support or research....

To me, the pink ribbon campaign is the epitome of brilliant branding and nothing more. I feel almost guilty for not buying into the hype. It has the makings of a cult. Now before someone calls for my head on a platter, let me say that this has nothing to do with those who have or are battling breast cancer...it's a horrible disease. So let's clear that up.
Breast cancer is the disease de jour. Much "sexier" than campaigning for heart disease which claims far more women's lives! It makes me furious to see pink on athletes, pink sneakers for heaven's sake! NOW who's making the money!? Have there been great strides in breast cancer from the billions that are raised?
I believe that there must be more transparency in research and where exactly that money is going and what they're researching exactly!
Sorry if that's too blunt, but when women are being sent home from emergency rooms with tranquilizers because male doctors have no idea what our symptoms are, only to die at home, then YES...I'm furious.Last edited by Lynn49; Thu, Feb 2nd, 2012 at 09:06 AM.

I have never bought a pink ribbon item, because one, we don't know where the money is going and two, I'm not a fan of the color pink. Does that mean I wouldn't support the cause, no, I'd rather give the money directly to the appropriate cancer society.

There's a lot of internet buzz because of the Susan G Komen defunding some of Planned ParentHood's (PPH) breast cancer screening.
One of the things really being publicised is that over 80% of funds raised goes to admin and salaries leaving around 18% going to research and prevention.
eta
Here's a quick review for 2009:
Komen took in $331,328,414 in donations and revenues.
Komen's General Administration costs, in 2009, were $37,148,000.
Their total fundraising costs across all programs were $29,496,000.
In the same year, the total amount given out, or allocated to:
- Research was $70,147,000
- Educational programs were $135,529,000
- Screening was $39,653,000, and
- Treatment assistance was $22,330,000.
<snip>
So, out of the $331,328,414 raised by public support and revenues, only $59,179,051 went to RESEARCH FOR A CURE. Only 17% of the donations received and revenue earned by Komen in 2009 went to "finding a cure." I find it very hard to believe that Komen's lawyers can justify their lawsuits by claiming they are acting as stewards for their donors' monies. For Komen to lay claim to the term "for the cure" or any variation of "the cure," shouldn't they need to show a greater effort towards funding the research required to find "THE CURE?"

That unfortunately comes as no surprise to me, Darth...sad but true...When that much money is involved there are some cats getting really fat. And I'm sure that a lot of manufacturers (think pink!) and pharmaceuticals (can we say "Republican" interests?!) aren't starving, either.

breast cancer is a treatable disease
too much hype and marketing about it
not all cancer leads to death, especially breast cancer.
