For people who don't have access to a Safeway, you may not be able to earn the same big bonus airmiles but the basic principles still apply (look at the value of an airmile as a discount off the price, don't collect them just for their own sake and possibly pay more for your reward than you would if you just bought it outright).

I also took advantage of Best Western's promo last year where if you spent $100+ you received the equivalent number of air miles (thanks Opera Bob!). Also, one thing I just thought of today, since the bulk of my air miles are obtained through my credit card, I'm going to start buying $100 gift cards a month at No Frills or Loblaws. I do most of my shopping at NF so at least I'll get 5 air miles a month by buying the gift card since I get 1 AM for every $20 on my credit cards. Then I'll just use the GCs for my groceries.

I gave up on Airmiles after I wanted to redeem for a flight and learned that after taxes and fees the years of collecting weren't worth it. If a store happens to have it I will still use my pts card but I no longer use the AM credit card. I found cash back credit cards (Capital One or MNBA) are a better value.

Also can redeem for investment voucher if you do your banking at BMO. I think it's 950 AM for $100 investment certificate.

i rarely buy into the wus $1 get 1 airmile. --- in the summer i got the deal on halls cough drops and chocolate bars at pharma wub2 @1 each you got 10 airmiles
that was a great deal!!! also metro has some great deals that earn you 1.5-2 airmiles per $1 spent. i shop for those deals only. children's place also has some good airmiles deals
if they don't have good offerings i'll do sdm or sobeys that week

Actually I think those "spend $100 get 100 airmiles" offers are the best time to shop at Safeway. Especially when you can get two of them scanned during checkout. Look at it as a further discount on top of the item discounts you get because of individual airmiles deals.

This week for instance, we were running low on cereal so I bought 5 kelloggs (B5G75) so the 6.99 sale price dropped further to 5.04 each - I value airmiles at $.13 since I redeem them for best western cards. Also bought six cherrios (which included free movie passes in them, plus gave me 2 free 4L milks). Yes that's a lot of cereal but we'll go thru that in 5-6 weeks easy in our family.

Also the Nature's Blend bagels came in at $2 with the sale + airmiles discount so picked up 4 of those. Got some Bluewater frozen fish fillets for 3.91 ea (normally more than $8ea). Etc. A few more items in the cart and the total came to just over $100. Scanned in the two different "spend $100 get 100 airmiles" coupons - one online and one from the flyer.

Total airmiles was 360 on just over $100 in spending -- those airmiles are worth $47 to me. The 200 extra airmiles alone are worth $26, which if you spread out as additional discounts over the purchased products, makes the effective product cost much lower than I could by them at any other store.

To me that's what it's all about -- getting the groceries I need at the best price possible.

Do store clerks generally scan both 100 airmile offers for you? Or do you use the self check out?

Thru regular checkouts (no self checks) and I've never had a cashier not scan both coupons. I always ask explicitly for them to do it, saying they are different PLU codes (which they are) and saying "I'm not sure if the computer will allow it but just in case..."

You'll see both offers show up at the bottom of your receipt, and you can double check that they are credited to your account at airmiles.ca. They always have for me so far. This might stop suddenly at any time if/when safeway changes their system, but right now it's an extra $13 discount that makes it worth shopping there for me.
