7 years ago, a friend volunteered in Uganda for a few months, at which time he met a 15-year old girl, named Julie.
Julie did very well in school but her education was coming to an end, since her mother couldn't afford to send Julie out of the village for high school. Although the costs may seem small to us, to Ugandans the price was steep.
My friend contacted his wife and suggested that they pay for Julie's high school expenses. She agreed and starting telling family, friends and co-workers about this amazing girl they were going to give a bit of help to in Uganda. Immediately others were moved by Julie's story and wanted to help with her school expenses. We made small contributions over the years and were thrilled reading updates about Julie's life.
I must mention that Julie also contributed to her school and living expenses. She has quite an entrepreneurial spirit and always had summer jobs and part-time jobs during school, whether it was raising chickens or selling cell phone air time. Julie never took her good fortune for granted.
Our small contributions continued over the years while Julie excelled throughout high school and then through university, graduating a few weeks ago with an Engineering Degree!!! My friends went to Uganda to attend the graduation, and then a few days later the party for Julie in her village. At the party it was announced that Julie had been offered a permanent position at the telecommunications company where she had been interning.
Before heading to Uganda for the graduation, my friends closed the bank account for Julie and gave the remaining funds to her, telling her to spend it however she wanted. In true Julie style, she bought pigs for her Mother to raise, thereby ensuring a bit more income for her Mom.
I am so proud of Julie. This thread is currently associated with: N/ALast edited by kristeven; Thu, Feb 9th, 2012 at 08:37 PM.
