As a long time gardener and plant grower I only buy seeds for things like lettuce and spinach...otherwise my small garden needs only half a dozen tomato plants and pepper plants. I buy those now and get a good selection...a few Early Girls, a few sweet millions...and assorted peppers. Buy the time I factor in the cost of soil, fertilizer, my time and the cost of seeds it is by far cheaper to buy the plants.

Check the containers when you buy--often pots of 1 will have two or three plants growing in them...every year I find these bonuses!! You have to look through the whole tray but there are always some...hubby laughs at me. So for less than a dollar i can get 3 tomato plants that are ready to plant.

For years I grew my own, used a fantastic set of growing lights that hubby crafted for me...and I ended up with far too many plants, but the neighbours were happy. They were beautiful plants!!

I do save seeds from my lettuce and spinach--I always let them go to seed. Just in case I have some extras on hand, generally from the dollar store.
Our town hosts a local seed exchange too--all my seeds last year were FREE...lots of veggies and flowers, many heirloom varieties. Sadly I missed the event this year.

I am hoping that next year hubby will build me a small greenhouse where I can play....nothing better than digging in the dirt! Flowers are my passion....

yeah sales on seeds will probably start in the next few weeks, once it gets warmer and the time to start seeds indoors for outside plants is upon us.

I've also found this site which is really neat http://myfolia.com/. You can see what "zone" you're in and what others in your zone are planting, see if there are gardeners around you and what they are having success growing, track your plantings (unless i put them in the system or on a calendar I'm not always sure to remember lol), and they also have a seed/seedling swap. There are forums, similar to here, with very knowledgeable people who are happy to help. PLUS... and I can't stress this enough... a basic membership (which gets you all of the above and more) is FREE.

Can't recommend it enough to experienced gardners and new gardeners alike.

If you don't mind online shopping, I get my seeds from artisticgardens.com!
They offer 40¢ sample seed packets, which is really all you need for a single garden.
Full sized packets are $1.05 and shipping is $3.50 to Canada no matter how many you order. They have a pretty good selection too! Great place to start.
I've ordered there a couple times and have had great experiences. Customer service is awesome too.

For years, I've boughtt seeds at the dollar store - or at our local Co-op home centre, when they are on 3/$1 - and they are totally fine.

janetta - thanks for the website - can't wait to look through it!

dont forget to check the sizes of the pakges (sometimes number of seeds sometimes weights) to compare 1.79 1.99 doesnt sound to bad but they may not have many seeds in them

the newer the variety the higher the price, sometimes heirlooms are more but sometimes less!

Have had good luck with seeds from William Dam, Stokes and Dominion (but the last 2 add up as the packages are to big)

I picked some up at Canadian Tire on the weekend and used my $5 scratch card to get them cheap.

many areas do a seed exchange of local heirloom seeds - just google "Seedy Saturday" & your local town/region to see what you can find.

also try Craigslist & Kijiji under the garden section....lots of people are starting to sell plants, as well as clean out their sheds & garages and have all kinds of gardening stuff for sale cheap.

I prefer this company. They send from Ontario to BC (where i am) Never had an issue I have and receive strong healthy plants ready to plant for the gardener on the go!
