I just wanted to share with everyone a great way to pick up extra cash..I l live in a rural area and every Saturday morning the DH and I take our dog a go for a short drive down some of the side roads and then we get out and walk. While we are walking we pick up any beer bottles, cans or liqure bottles we see... Every month for the last 4 months we have gotten $74.50, $90.00, $58.00, and this past month was a whopping $164.30. We enjoy it because we like to walk and it is sharing quality time together. The bonus is that we are making money at it. Also on a couple of our drives we found some nice pieces of furniture that people were giving away. Often people out in the country put the stuff they do not want out front of their house for people to take...

I would do this too but I'm not sure if you can actually return bottles for money where I am in Ontario. Atleast I don't think so otherwise I'd be offering to take away everyones from our building!

WOW! There must be a lot of people throwing that stuff away in your area!! Good for you, and great that you're helping to keep the roads clean at the same time, but sad that so many people would do that.
Just a question, how much do you get paid per bottle or can?
My neighbours son does this, he has a bike with a trailer behind and he collects pop cans to turn in. Great way for him to earn some extra spending money.<center><embed src="http://www.widdlytinks.com/myfamily/silhouettes/silhouettefamily.swf" flashvars="t1=The Bernard Family&pv1=0&pn1=6&px1=251.55&pf1=1&pv2=0&pn2=22&p x2=186.8&pf2=0&pv3=0&pn3=12&px3=305.85&pf3=1&pv4=1 &pn4=9&px4=278.8&pf4=0&pv5=1&pn5=3&px5=226.8&pf5=1 &pv6=0&pn6=1&px6=102.8&pf6=1&pv7=1&pn7=24&px7=317. 8&pf7=1" quality="high" wmode="transparent" name="My Family Silhouettes" allowscriptaccess="samedomain" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" pluginspage="http://www.macromedia.com/go/getflashplayer" align="middle" height="230" width="500">

Good stuff! We used to do that too, when we lived in New Brunswick. I called it our 'tax-free income' walks.
Didn't take long to add up to $70-$80 at a time.

You will get money in Ontario for: beer, wine, any liquor bottles. We don't get them for pop cans or bottles though. You bring them in to the Beer store.

In ON you just get money for beer bottles. No wine, glass, plastic, cans, whatever.
Good on OP for helping the environment, but I'm wondering how so many get into the ditch in a rural area in the first place
I think it is one of the few places where there is no deposit. I lived in Quebec for a few months and people thought I was dumb for throwing them out in the recycling when I could take them back to the store and get money. How was I supposed to know things were different

It's a great time of year for doing these walks with the snow melting! I've joked about going up to Fort McMurray around this time and probably being able to pay for gas with cans! I'm glad that someone can benefit from the careless littering of others.
