My first daughter was born at 34 weeks, 6 days, that was in May of 2009, she was born vaginally and only had low blood sugar at birth, she spent 7 hours in the NICU.
My second daughter was born at 35 weeks, that was in October of 2010, she was born by emergency c section as she was breech, she was in the NICU for 5 days, had to be guavaged, cpac, etc.
I am scheduled on Thursday to have our 3rd daughter by csection. We took all precauctions this time, I took sick time through work, took progestrone from week 26, had cervical ultrasounds every 2 weeks from 28 weeks on, took steriods for baby's lungs and rested as much as possible...tomorrow will be week 38!

I also meant to write yesterday but one of the girls distracted me...both the girls saw an Infant Development Specialist until they were at least 1 year of age. The IDS came to our house or we went to her office and she did activities with the girls to make sure that they were developing at a pace that was "appropriate" for their corrected age, if she had concerns she could refer the girls to specialists and such. Both the girls were also put on a waitlist for speech therapy immediately as the waitlist was so long (1 year).
As someone who holds an Early Childhood Education and works at a day care I understood the importance of early intervention. I didn't want to be a parent who was in denial but also accepted from the beginning that the girls may need some extra help. All the services were free and I embraced them all, and very thankful that I did.

Wow! Some amazingly hardy little ones you all have. Congratulations to you all
One of my acquaintances had a baby a bit premature (34 weeks if I remember), and did what Craiger advised - made sure that she got assessments and early intervention for her LO to ensure that any problems (so far, so good) were nipped in the bud.

WOW -- what a day to read this thread. Firstly, Congratulations
Second - I was just released from the hospital Friday as I had some cramping earlier in the week and tested positive for pre-term labour. I'm really happy to hear all the successful preemies out there. I am only at 25 weeks and scared outta my wazoo that I'm going to screw this up. Thanks for letting me read your stories -- I feel a little better now.Zia_Stephie really wants you as my swagbucks referral...PM me and I'll send you the link. Thanks!

Congratulations! Your daughter at 32wks+6 is likely what Drs will call "feeders & growers" - their development in-utero is complete. Unless there are complications they are likely keeping her just to make sure that she can regulate her body temp, develop her suck/ swallow reflex and gain weight. She is likely in Level2 NICU (no breathing tube/ intubation) and at most, on CPAP.
My triplets were born at 26wks gestation (combined weight less than 5 lbs) - stayed in Level 3 NICU for 3, 4, and 6 months. What would you like to know?

CONGRATULATIONS shejayd!!
My son was born at 36 (just made it!) weeks, at 5 lbs, 5 oz. He was in NICU for 2 weeks.
He just turned 3 about a month ago, and he's taller than all the kids his age around here! You'd never know now that he was so tiny when he was born!Last edited by hogama; Wed, May 2nd, 2012 at 03:24 PM.

Congrats!!
My younger sister was born one day shy of 28 weeks, she was in NICU for 3 1/2 months.
Was a very sick kid for most of her childhood, she just turned 20 and is perfectly normal & fine. Well mostly anyways...
