I just finished shopping at Zellers. I use the word 'shopping' reluctantly because I didn't actually buy anything there. My mother got a few items though. Since the cash registers are right by the door and we were the only ones at the checkout, the employee watched her pay for her purchases. As we were exiting, the employee blocked the door and said that she needed to see our receipt. My mother starts digging through the bag to find it and finally produces it. The employee then takes a pink highlighter and puts a line on the receipt. I ask her, "What's the point of all this?". The cashier points to a sign that says that customers may be asked to show a receipt before leaving the store. I said, "It says they may be asked to show a receipt, and you watched us go through the checkout. Was it actually necessary to have my mother dig through the bag to find the receipt that you didn't even really look at?". She replied, "I was bored."

This is standard at Costco, so it doesn't seem unusual; the cashiers should tell customers to have their receipt out before exiting the store.

She was bored????!!!! Asking to see the receipt may not have bothered me but that dumb-a** response sure would have. And they wonder target isn't hiring them carte blanc.
So many coupons....so little time!

When it became a clearance store near us they had someone checking everyone on their way out as well - hopefully that was the only reason why!

Same at the Zellers here, as soon as it turned into a clearance store, there was someone always at the door checking receipts.

Are they thinking that people are going to start doing more stealing because the stores are in liquidation and have less good stuff? Confusing.

This was happening at our store before it closed as well. I think it's standard once the store hits clearance/closing mode.
It's pretty funny though. I cant understand their line of thinking. Like, people will steal items on clearance but not full price? lol
Honestly pretty much EVERYTHING Zellers did while in clearance mode was ridiculous (at least in our store). I walked by the other day and saw the store bare (no shelving, nothing) and I got giddy for Target. Kind of makes me feel a bit guilty but I grew to hate that store so VERY much.

WM at 401 & Morningside checks almost every customer going out for a receipt??? I comply, in fact I do not put the receipt away till I pass them, saves digging it back out.
I lol at DH, he ignores and walks right past them with the cart, follow him to the parking lot if you want he says. They ignore him now.

The first time I went to clearance store there was a security guard and an employee at the door. I kept my receipt out and asked the employee if she wanted to see it. She glanced at it.
After that, I only ever saw a security guard. He was usually chatting with somebody or looking bored.
It's very unprofessional to say "I was bored", but I guess it doesn't matter when you're losing your job anyways.
