A prayer, a thought, whatever you do.. it'd be greatly appreciated.

My boyfriend and I are currently long distance (bah!) and I woke up this morning to a text "Going back to Tennessee, think Papaw had a stroke and is refusing to go to the hospital".

They left North Carolina at 5, and made the three hour drive to TN.

His aunt called his mom saying that my BF's grandpa had a droopy lower lip, slurred speach and his left arm wouldn't stop jumping. He was refusing to go to the hospital (he's only ever been to the hospital ONCE). The only one able to convince him to go is my BF's Mom (the one who convinced him the last time). So they're gone back to TN to hopefully convince him to go.

It's now 2 am and my BF hasn't replied to messages/updated. I have no idea how their drive went, if they're okay, and if his grandpa is okay.

(This will definitely be a long night, every time my phone beeps (I have facebook connected to it) I run to see if it's him)

I've never had anyone close to me have a stroke, Not exactly sure I want to google it either.

I'll keep him in my prayers, and positive thoughts that he's going to recover okay.

The most important thing with someone having a stroke is to get to a hospital ASAP because there is a clot-busting medicine (tPA) which if they use within three hours, it's quite successful.

Bella, there are just so many variations with strokes - depends upon what kind, the age and health of the patient, etc. It's really hard to speculate as to what's up with your friend's grandfather.

An aunt of mine in her early 80s had a stroke this summer, had symptoms like you describe, but honestly within a month, she was back to her very busy life with just some weakness left in an arm.

Contrast that with my oldest sister's husband, in his late 60s, who had a stroke in late spring - and it was a very unusual type. He had lots of things to deal with after - both physically and mentally - and just after all these past months of rehab and therapy in which he was progressing quite well, last week he had a grand mal seizure caused by the scarring from the stroke, and he's in bad shape again - most particularly, his memory is wiped out.

So, you see there are major variances in what results can be....

Prayers and thoughts are with you. I wouldn't recommend checking online because anyone can put anything online. I'm sure that once there is news, you'll hear something.

I totally understand the difficulty and frustration with living long distance. I've been married for 11.5 years. For the two years we were engaged we lived long distance while we each went to separate universities. Now, he's got a job in Boston and we're living separately again until my immigration paperwork comes through. It's so challenging and difficult to know that you're significant other is away from you, especially when an emergency happens. I just keep thanking God that he's not in the military. I know that he's safe and I'll see him again soon. I can't even imagine military spouses not knowing if they'll ever see their spouse again. How horrific!

Welp, we talked at 5 am. He was just getting home. Thirty minutes before my BF arrived they brought his grandpa to the ER, because he almost passed out.
He said that he was having convulsions and they put him on life support, and sedated the heck out of him.

They said his carbon monoxide levels were REALLY high, which is why he almost passed out. He's also hallucinating. And he's really sedated, as he's not registering anything.

Oh, goodness - carbon monoxide poisoning is not good - a few weeks ago in a town near our city, a couple (recently engaged) hadn't opened the family business in the morning, and they were found with CO poisoning - the man died, she's still in serious condition in hospital.
Their home had carbon monoxide level of 250 parts per million when the standard residential limit shouldn't be more than two parts per million.

    Praying for Grandfather's recovery.....

I just wanted to say thank you to everyone.

He just updated me again, they lowered the amount of oxygen he was getting and he's responding well. They're saying the cause of the stroke-like symptoms were the carbon monoxide poisoning symptoms, caused by.. smoking!!
