Thread: Mold in my apartment!
-
Sun, Dec 23rd, 2012, 09:21 PM #1
On Nov 30th some men came to replace the windows in my apartment and put in a thermostat, they put two big holes i the roof and put the windows in BUT they never finished the job so the window is in with some foam around it but thats it. They are sitting on some wood and theres pieces of the wall missing and what not. 24 days in not acceptable and to leave it looking like that over the holidays is just disrespectful. Thats not the worst part! Yesterday I noticed that the there is mold all in the walls where they took out some pieces! So whoever put in the windows clearly noticed the mold and noone has said anything! Ive been sleeping 3 feet away from this and wondering why my asthma has been at its worst! Is there anything I can do? Ive already been looking to move but this is the last straw.

Ack, I'm sorry, I didn't read carefully enough. I'd definitely not sleep in that room if you can help it. Is there a rental board in your region that you can contact for more info as to what you can do asap?

Call your landlord and make them aware of the situation. If you do not get anywhere immediately with your landlord then call your local city health inspector ASAP. They are the ones that will get the ball rolling and make your landlord fix it.
Do not WAIT. Black mold is VERY dangerous.Last edited by CrazyQT; Sun, Dec 23rd, 2012 at 10:22 PM.

I had to deal with it at my dad's place and sister's room.
Used this http://www.homedepot.ca/product/946-...-bottle/949056
and now they are breathing better. Plus wash in bleach and water.

I am in a similar situation, only the windows need to be replaced (30+ years old windows in the apartment). The entire 151 unit building has the same issue.
Call your landlord. Get them to fix it, document everything. If they don't fix it, put it in writing sent by registered mail. The rentalboard here will not take any action unless communication has been done in writing via registered post :S. It's been 14 days here, the landlord has done nothing.
I killed the surface mold using diluted bleach, hydrogen peroxide and spray nine, alternating. But I am extremely worried about what may be in the walls. I've had severe headaches since we've moved in this apartment. The mold has only appeared in the last few weeks. We have six months left of our lease (it has been a nightmare year). The rentalsman's office will not do anything unless things are in writing here. I though verbally telling the super and seeing her put the request into the maintenance people counted, but it doesn't, so we are stuck even longer in an unhealthy apartment.
Good luck, and document, document, document. I agree with the above suggestions of a dehymidyer and air purifyer. I have a dehymidyfer and will have to look into an air purifyer.Try out the maven box by julep And code FREEFB, and get your box for one cent:

Thank you for this thread. I just got this http://www.homedepot.ca/product/946-...-bottle/949056 and used it today in all the areas that there is mold in my apartment (three windows and patio door). There is little to no odor from it. For me if it lessens the amount of mold that would be great, as currently having used bleach, spray 9 etc it comes back within a few days.

Mold can kill.. or cause other severe health problems, you need to notify your Landlords, or the government agency for Landlords, if you own the house, you need to get to Home Depot, talk to someone, and get the right products to make the mold disappear. I had it once in a older home, that had sawdust for insulation (tells you how the house was).. Every winter and Spring, I had to wash that wall with Javex before ripping down the walls, putting proper insulation in, and doing the walls properly.. But again if you rent.. it's time to get to the Landlord.. do not play around with this stuff..

Just to note, bleach doesn't actually kill mould. It will help because you're cleaning off the spores (physically removing it).
http://www.prlog.org/11715223-bleach...-mold-why.html
Mould spores are some of the most resilient things on earth. Your landlord needs to pay someone in mould remediation to clean that for you. They need to wear all the proper protective gear and remove as much mould as possible, replacing building materials as necessary to lessen the risk. I would definetly stay the heck out of that room.
(I say all this because part of my job is mould remediation for artefacts and people are really unaware how stubborn mould is and how difficult it is to limit.)
Edited to say: get the heck out of there with your asthma! I have asthma too and we're a very high risk for exposure to mould.Last edited by canadablue; Tue, Dec 25th, 2012 at 12:10 PM.

I'm going to read the product label when I go into Home Depot next time--need to know what's in it and any scents (as three of us are sensitive to various scents that can cause headaches). The product claim of getting rid of musty odours has my attention.
*Noticed the material safety datasheet-active ingredient is trisodium phosphate, the stuff used to clean walls to prep for painting.

Hmm, no need for personal protection? Must assume that user is only spraying the product and not actually wiping it around with sponge or other tool.
Regular TSP use requires gloves-must be a solution strength difference.Last edited by Ciel; Wed, Dec 26th, 2012 at 11:39 AM.

I've been using the mold control stuff from home depot, seems to be helping with slowing down regrowth. The landlord came in today, and they are going to get some window specialist in to see if anything can be done about the condensation on the windows which is causing the mold (I'm already running a dehymidifyer etc) and they are bringing in bath fitters to address the rusted bathtub.
The mold control does however stain the windowsill if left to pool. There is little to no smell from it. I think using this product has helped with my migraines, which I am sure is caused by the mold.
