In September I purchased a new purse from Reitman's. It seemed like good quality, similar to buying a purse at Bentley's. The original price tag was $50. I got it on sale for $15. I thought I was getting a really good deal. Well...I've now had the purse for 4 months. I do use it almost everyday, but I don't think 4 months is a very long time. There is now a hole in it, plus the one side is really worn. I'm not really upset as I paid sale price for it, so it wasn't really expensive. If I had paid the original price I would be fuming. That seems like a steep price tag for a purse that lasted 4 months.

Sadly I find in general the quality of purses is not what it used to be. I tend to switch up my purses every month or so (I get bored or annoyed with the purse). Yes my purse goes everywhere with me but after a month I should not be seeing tears and worn strips after only 1 month. This even happened with an expensive purse I was given as a gift.

My mom bought me a designer purse from a Florida outlet mall when I was a teen and I have been convinced ever since that quality comes with the price. My $30 purses from the stores in the mall were constantly breaking. If you want quality, you gotta pay for it! This is why I love Winners. You can find the quality items at a much discounted price!

I think it's more that the original price was $50. Even though I got it on sale, the quality should still reflect the original price. I still think that 4 months isn't very long to have a purse. If I had paid the original price, that means that the purse cost $12.50 per month! Even at the price I paid the purse still cost $3.75 per month. I'd be upset if I bought a pair of jeans for $50 and they only lasted 4 months, same with a sweater, coat, or other clothing. I expect my bra to last more than 4 months. Why shouldn't a purse last that long?

What is it made out of? If it's cloth, vinyl, or anything synthetic, I wouldn't expect it to last very long.
If the stitching is not done properly, I wouldn't expect it to last long either. Ditto if you tend to put heavy things in it and it's a lightweight purse. I'm guilty of that.
Can you sew or know anyone who does? They might be able to fix it up easily, depending on how badly it's damaged.
I try to buy my purses in leather and they've lasted me the past decade. Interestingly enough, I bought a leather purse for $30 once (clearance), and saw the exact same model at Coach (same internal pocket, size, stitching detail, etc.) but it was $300! I nearly fell over...

My Dad picked up 2 leather purses for me when he was overseas years ago and they lasted forever. I just one a $225 leather purse a year ago, use it every day, and it still looks new.

I can understand wanting to buy something and have it last. I think it all depends on the quality. I bought a wallet from bently four years ago now, and it is still going strong. I paid fifty cents for it. I even bought a second one thinking for that price it won't last. The second one hasn't been used yet, the first one is still going strong, a small rip on the inside, but that is it. You never know.

yup, sometimes the original is pretty misleading.
the way i look at it is that 25-30% is the actual 'real' price of an item. that is the price you should consider to be the regular price. stores don't expect ppl to pay full sticker price anyways, they know ppl are waiting for it to go on sale. when it goes on sale for 30% (a fairly common every-other-weekend discount these days) a lot of ppl are going to buy it thinking they are getting a little bit of a deal. the stores are still laughing, because the 30% off price still gives them plenty of profit.
50% is a little bit of a discounted price.
65-70% off is when you are actually getting a deal.
i buy most items from higher end stores at 60-75% off. i buy better quality, at reasonable prices and have been happy so far following that system.
i do not blame the OP one bit for being miffed. things should last more than a season sheesh!
but hey, at least you got it on clearance, and know better for next time. maybe reitman's purses will get passed next time

That is not long enough for a purse. Would shoot off an email to Reitmans and complain. Have 3 purses that I rotate and they have been going for a few years now.

Leather purses are the way to go... unfortunately, there seem to be fewer leather ones available in department stores. I can't stand the way vinyl purses feel and smell. They often seem to have a better selection of reasonably-priced leather purses in the US. I do like some of the Danier purses the last couple seasons, though.

The Bay has plenty of leather purses. You just have to be willing to pay for them
