Sadly I'd be surprised if there is much cheaper. Our dog broke her leg in the early 90's and it was $1800 back then.

Sorry to hear, I highly doubt you will find much cheaper. My dad's cat got hurt a few years back and it cost a fortune for surgery and meds and follow-ups.
Please do not get mad at me for this as I am only repeating what was said to my bro (he was the one who took the cat to vet) he was told it would be cheaper to put the cat down. We DID NOT put the cat we got him his surgery and have nurse him back and now you cannot even tell.
