Okay, so we all know they're not a heath food. But what I didn't know
about those cookies as well as the Boy Scout popcorn (?) sales makes
a lot of sense. Couldn't they sell something healthy yet delicious? I'm not
talking carrot sticks here...just something better for kids and better for
    our environment.

I bet you have an opinion...

Well, I'm thinking that's very American - unless you in the East get different cookies than we do here.
Ah, yes they are - I should have realized from your use of 'Girl Scouts' instead of 'Girl Guides'...

We get the box of mixed classic chocolate and vanilla - I've read there are mint, too, but I've never seen them. I read the mixed boxes are the spring campaign, the mint are in the fall.

They are a cool tradition, going back to 1927 in Regina, SK when a leader made and sold cookies to raise money for uniforms and activities.
They still fund a lot for the GGs.

So, they are a treat. One can choose to buy and consume them if one wishes, it's a choice.

    Just like everything else.

Expensive, yes, they are! But besides being a contribution to the organization, they are yummy!
We see them as a once a year treat!

I had never heard of Scouts selling popcorn, maybe it's just not done in our area.

Should I have said Girl Guides? Oops..probably, since they sell them here...

I see your point, Natalka, but it concerns me that they're causing environmental damage, and that kids are peddling such crap. I love that Boy Scouts here peddle apples...at least they're nutritious, although to be a complete curmudgeon here...can't they think of something those kids can do besides peddling? Wash cars? Mow lawns? Do something that will make the same money? I don't know.....I do know it bugs the heck out of me. The WORST are those hockey teams peddling pieces of paper!! I never buy into that, because again....get them out there DOING something besides begging for money!

But that's just me being grouchy..

I don't buy the guides' cookies, nor the chocolates peddled by sports clubs, nor the cookie dough sold by the PTA at the school in the neighbourhood, or most of the other stuff. I think these sales are so common and frequent that it contributes to making this stuff "everyday" and normal instead of being a special treat. Heck, I remember my own Dad buying 10 boxes of cookies from me one year because I was having a lot of trouble selling them door-to-door and he didn't want me bugging the neighbours (he gave 'em away to his coworkers... they weren't for us!) and peddling junk.

That said, I do like the boy scout popcorn sales, or at least what the scouts sold at my door. On several occasions, I've bought bagged popcorn kernels to use in our hot-air popper, which in my mind is a pretty awesome snack. I am guessing based on your question that most of the popcorn they sell is the pre-popped variety, though? (and probably with caramel, "cheeze", chocolate, or something else?) If that's the case, then I think it's in the same category.

I also have an honourable mention to give to the gymnastics club I was in when I was eight; we sold boxes of oranges and grapefruits to raise money for the club. I think sales like that are a bit better, at least because you're coming out of it with something healthy!

GMO's of any kind make me shudder. If only knew how much of it was in processed foods, it would probably turn most people off from eating it altogether. It really makes a person wonder what people will be eating 50 years from now, will any of it have ingredients like eggs, milk or vanilla?????

So true, Holly - I always wonder about the people who have gone soy-crazy, too! Soy and corn - and their many derivatives - are the biggest GMO culprits.

About the fund-raising aspects - we do reciprocate for those families in our neighbourhood whose kids are fundraising because they supported our son when he was doing it in school as well (though we were lucky, he only had tickets once a year to sell).

I love the Girl Guide cookies! I stopped at Brownies since I didn't want to go camping in plastic tents with the GG's. They used to sell the mint ones here, but I haven't seen them in years. When I lived in the country they would go door to door, but they don't seem to do that anymore - they've switched to the grocery stores and malls now.

I think it's a great way for them to fund raise - yes, they could do something more "productive" instead of peddling junk food, but to me it's a tradition. The boy scouts used to sell apples door to door when I lived in the country, not sure if they do any more now.

OP - love the Girl Guides and Boy Scouts. And Cadets too.
    Will always, always support them.
We buy the cookies and give them away.
