    Just read this: http://www.forbes.com/sites/adamtann...zip-code-ever/.
It's an article from the US but I think things work the same way in Canada.

I never knew it was so bad giving out postal code to stores when asked. Now I won't do it again.

You know what my friend? The way things are changing, you won't have to give out your postal code for govt/business to screw with your privacy in a matter of a few years. It seems, a majority of people no longer care about there own privacy, therefore neither does business nor government.

for some of us, the whole town shares a postal code..

If the store gets inistant, I see no problem in lying to them.

    Do not tell them ANYTHING.

Everything is referenced and cross-referenced and re-crissreferenced with what was originally referenced and then...JUST SAY NO!!! or lie....before they get your phone number and stalk you.

Yup. In the other thread I said that when they persisted, I told them the postal code was H0H 0H0

Okay....I might be a little slow in processing this, but the only place that I've been asked for my postal code is Michaels. I've given it, but when I ask what it's for, I get something along the lines of demographics, etc....I really don't care (I don't t hink) about the fact that they have my address through that process, since I've never been lambasted with emails and other propaganda...
So why...again, please...(and I did read that url posting) shouldn't I give that information out?
This new age marketing and targeting stuff sometimes baffles me....

This is the new way to steal your wallet from your pocket or from your purse.

The information you provide is stored in the store's database.
Hackers can get into a store's database.
Hackers can sell your information to other hackers, for a price.

Your bank information can be stolen that way.

Happened to TJ Maxx, who owns Winners and Home Sense. Winners and Home Sense sometimes asks for your information.

They asked for the postal code at Mark's Work Wearhouse today - Oshawa!
(great 70% off clearance by the way).

I smiled ever so sweetly and said to the employee, "Do mind if I say No"? She said, "No problem" and gave me a $10 coupon that went to today's purchase.

I was ready to give an explanation -- I'm thinking she already got an earful from a few people earlier today.

    Good job!
In the past I was asked for postal code during the payment transaction at Royal Mint store. Instead of asking "Can I have your postal code", they phrased it as "what's your postal code?" without looking at you, which made it seem like a necessity to complete the transaction. Tricky.
