This law would be laughable if it wasnt so offensive and discriminatory. As for the hijab being a symbol of oppression, I wish someone would ask a muslim woman for her opinion on the matter.

Regarding the christening of children - they are deemed to be innocent in the eyes of the Catholic church, so are baptized/christened regardless of the marital status of the parents.

This was spotlighted once again by Pope Francis this past May.

The Italian catholic churches are not doing it here.

    This one says it all.

Unfortunately as we know many muslim women are not allowed to express their opinion on that either.

I respectfully disagree - some of my best friends are muslim, my ma in law, sis in laws and nieces are muslim, and they choose to wear the hijab, and they wear it with pride. But they, and all other canadians who choose to wear a hijab, a turban, a cross, or a kippah should not be told by a provincial law that they cannot wear it.

Well, they're not being told they can't wear it. They're being told they can't wear it in a provincial government workplace while working for the provincial government.

This subject is so touchy. I'm not even going to attempt to put in my two cents but I will say, it's been good to hear the story from the inside. Thanks to Patty for that. As others have said, this is just the beginning and there is a very long, heated fight ahead.

I can't profess to understand God's plan. Christ promised the resurrection of the dead. I just thought he had something a little different in mind.

Yes and that is all they are being told. Nothing more, only at work. Although I still don't see the need for it. As I said they were stupid to add that clause, it's almost like they want it to fail based on that point alone. It's baffling.

Actually religion should not be a hot topic. It is something that should be questioned, scrutinized, debunked and then some.

Problem is people think that when you criticize religion you are criticizing the person so they get all offended.

In B.C Sikhs are allowed to ride motorcycles with no helmet, due to their beliefs about turbans. A few days ago I saw an south east Asian man riding with his son about 10 years old both with bandana like head wear. Why should we accommodate people from other countries to the point where they do not need to follow our law? Making all Canadians look different is not a good idea. Allowing Sikhs to wear religious head gear while playing soccer is like me sending my son to soccer wearing a huge cross around his neck. Which I do not believe would be appropriate. Just my 2 cents

Also a few years ago Premiere Charest actually had to have a news conference saying that Sharia law will never become a part of Quebec society. Imagine he had to actually address it because there was pressure from some radicals.
Thank you, Patty...I'm glad you're here to 'cover' the news in Quebec!

One of the things a lot of people don't grasp is that most of the rules regarding clothing choices are far more cultural than religious. Islam, like most religions, has a great respect for modesty in dressing which is for both males and females alike.

I know there are some Christian groups, especially in the Quiverful communities who promote highly modest female clothing to "prevent thier brothers from falling into sin".

Orthodox Jewish women tend to cover thier hair and dress modestly as do groups like the Amish and Mennonites. Mormons tend not to cover thier hair but modesty in dress is expected for both sexes too.

I knew several Pakistani women who only covered thier heads when in the mosque. I knew others who wanted to wear a hijab all the time..same country ..same religion, different cultures..

As one of the few female union shop stewards and a member of the equal oppotunities commitee*, I had to make several assesments regarding workplace safety and clothing choices, one of which involved being shown how to wear a hijab and TBH, I found it constricting at first but soon it didn't bother me. I still had to say it wasn't acceptable for some of the functions of my workplace due to trailing fabric in the same way the ties were restricted.

    * never miss a meeting when there are commitee places being elected, as you can't refuse in retrospect!

we can only hope that some of them who wish to wear what they like can finally break out and wear what they like. But religious and more importantly cultural expectations can be hard habits to break.

There were things I hated wearing as a child but had too. I know my kids hate wearing a school uniform but realise that's part of the priviledge of going to that school.
