Yesterday I got a early morning call from my Mom, she needed me to come and drive her and my Dad to the Urgent care to have my Dad looked at. He has had nosebleeds for the last three days and not little ones but hemmorages. He has lost alot of blood and is very weak. My Dad has had melenoma on his nose and has had it removed before twice my concern is this is a tumour inside the nose causing this.
All they did at urgent care was pack his nose and send him home. The never gave him a xray to see what was causing it they did look up there but that is not enough. They are making an appt with a specialist but that takes weeks to see even months .... by the time we got home the blood had soaked though the gauze they had put at the bottom of his nose but was not yet dripping.
They said if it hemmorages again to call an ambulance to take him to the hospital for immediate care. I hope it does because he needs more care then he got and it seems that is the quickest way to get it.
He is 83 btw.
Please add him to your prayers.

They didn't cauterize the bleeding? I don't know if they would do that since he has had a tumor, but I know that my sister gets nose bleeds very bad, and they have to cauterize them. We make fun of her cuz she shows up and looks like Hitler the way the skin gets burned.
Gramma gets them too, and they cauterize hers. Maybe you should go back with him and ask them to do this.Remember that even though pets are here for such a short time they teach us things we would never be able to learn in many lifetimes on our own.

Yes, if it continues then I see no other choice. The melanoma was on the skin but my worry is that is has made it inside the nose and the only way to tell is xrays which he never recieved.

Hi April:
Hope your Dad is feeling better, that sure is scary!! Maybe you may have to take him to a bigger hospital, means a long drive in winter weather, maybe pick a day when he is okay. Take care & Stay warm!

He might need a CT and not just xrays if the concern really is invasive cancer. Can he not go back to the doctor who follows him for his melanoma? Since he is already known to that office, he probably won't need to go through the referral process and will likely get in quicker if he explains his situation to the administrative assistant. Be nice to the admin people - they really do have a lot of power over appointment bookings.
Did the urgent care docs think it was cancer? Sometimes dry cold air can cause nose bleeds, and this can be worsened if you have a bleeding disorder or take blood thinners (e.g. aspirin, plavix, warfarin).
Either way, I personally would try to hook up with his melanoma doctor. Plus, that office would have all of history and imaging records for comparison.
