So Sorry to hear this happened.
Actually something like this happened to one of my co workers last year on New Years Eves and it is probably a good thing you were home because they were probably trying to break in. The police told my co worker that this is what criminals do now, they go to houses where it looks like no one is home and try to gain access by trying doors and hoping one is left unlocked. If they get caught in the act they have some sort of story in my co worker's case the guy claimed he was lost and broke and needed money for gas and thought he knew who lived there. Police call it crimes of opportunity they are looking for houses where no one appears to be home and they want easy access no doors to break down or windows to break.
I always have the door lock when I am home, I did it at our old house as I felt like someone could come to the door and I would not hear if I was in the back of the house and with our current home we are in a complex and just way too many people wondering around at times it feels like.2022 is going to be my year, the year I find organization in my life and the year I focus on myself,

That would be scary and I'm glad your okay Candini. I agree it's a good idea to keep your doors locked at all times.

Thank goodness you're safe. Our doors are locked all the time, and if I'm home alone and someone comes to the door when I'm not expecting anyone, I don't answer. Jenny barks her head off and they leave. I'm not curious, I'm not buying anything, go away. And we're in the burbs...but really...why would I answer?

That's frightening!
We always lock our doors- our french doors/mud room and our main door, garage entrance, back entrance and windows.
There have been more and more break-ins in the recent years in the neighborhood.
We also have an alarm system. I wish I had a dog, lol.
Like Lynne, I ignore a lot of people who come knocking on the door. Unless I peek through a window and it's the mail man, I don't bother answering it.

Lol...I first read "bat" as in that little black critter.....it's early and I just got up. And the coffee's just brewing.......

I wish we were allowed pepper-spray here; although there's no law against having bear spray near your door....

It really is shocking what happens these days and I hate to say as it sound so bad but it is so true, I trust no one. I had a friend who used to confront his neighbours (it was a rental that went through many tenants). Him doing this always scared me as you never know who the nut case is and who will attack you.
I agree with what everyone is saying about not answering the door. Our one neighbour started renting out rooms in his house last year and one of this first tenant (who thankfully is gone) had a habit of knocking on and banging on doors at 10 pm or later looking for smokes. This scared the crap out of me as no one should be knocking on my door that late not to mention I am usually in bed at this time.
I personally hate it anytime anyone knocks on my door unless I am expecting someone. We do not have guests just drop so when someone is coming we always know so an unexpected knock always makes me freeze for a second.2022 is going to be my year, the year I find organization in my life and the year I focus on myself,

Are you in an apartment? It is quite possible that he really was at the wrong unit. He sounds like he may have been drunk. It does happen sometimes in my apartment that someone will try their key in my door and then realize that they have the wrong place. I always keep it locked. I've never had anyone try to break the door down though. That would be scary! But you never know with some people.
Anyway, if you're in an apartment, you should let your super know in case there is someone trying to break into other units.
