Protesters use fireworks against berkut - the riot police, who are using Molotov cocktails, etc.

Until now there was a restriction that water cannons were not to be used when the temperature is below zero, but they were using them anyway. Today, restrictions were lifted by the government, and they are using them 'legally' - temperature there now is -10.

The government has also expanded what can be used by their forces, including smoke and gas grenades.

January 22, 2014 - Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird today issued the following statement:

“Canada condemns in the strongest possible terms the killing of protesters by Ukrainian police forces. My deputy minister has called in the Ukrainian ambassador to express Canada’s condemnation of the violence that occurred last night.

“We strongly urge the Ukrainian government to find a political solution by engaging in a real dialogue with the people of Ukraine. Continued violence will further undermine democracy and freedom in Ukraine and bring serious consequences. Canada, together with our international partners, is considering all possible options.

“On behalf of all Canadians, I extend heartfelt condolences to the families of those killed yesterday. Canada stands with the Ukrainian people, who courageously continue to speak out in support of democracy.”

Baird was at Maidan Dec. 5 to express support of Canada for the people of Ukraine.

    Vitali Klitschko

    Thursday 23 January 2014 13.28 GMT

An eight-hour truce has been declared by protesters in Kiev after a day of violence in which at least three people died and an opposition leader said he was willing to face "a bullet in the forehead" if Ukraine's president, Viktor Yanukovych, did not launch snap elections.

The truce was announced by opposition politician and former heavyweight boxer Vitali Klitschko at midday Kiev time, as negotiations between opposition leaders and Yanukovych were expected to continue. On Wednesday, a three-hour meeting between the sides ended without a deal, leaving the capital braced for intensified violence.

After the truce was announced, protesters began to extinguish the huge burning barricade, made of thousands of tyres, which has separated them from lines of riot police and been the focal point of clashes.

Klitschko said he would return to the barricades at 8pm local time (6pm GMT) to announce the results of negotiations.

So very scary and sad for all involved. Hope a peaceful resolution is reached sooner rather than later.

It's been relatively peaceful because of the truce, but time will be up on that soon.

Earlier, this man was beaten, stripped, and humiliated. Minus 11 temp there

There's a video, which I won't post because of bits...

They posed him for pictures, gave him that hoe to hold. When they let him get on a bus after one more swift kick from a policeman, you can see fresh marks all over his body - possibly from rubber bullets.

They've called a ceasefire for overnight. It's now midnight there and -15.

Tears in my eyes as the crowd of tens of thousands sing the national anthem...

I read this thread without practically breathing. We are all so busy with our lives that sometimes we forget about what happens in other countries. That's it until you end up reading a thread like this one and you are mortified about what happens to other people who are brave enough to protest against the decisions taken by government officials. It's a sad night for me but thank you for the images and the information

These priests are really something... every once in a while they will lead a service, but I'm sure they are praying constantly.

And while technology is wonderful for people around the world to watch streaming video from Ukraine and follow on Twitter, as I'm doing - there are also other things going on.

Protesters got messages like this on their cell phones - creepy tracking...

"Dear subscriber, you are registered as a participant in a riot” or
“Dear subscriber, you are registered as a participant in a mass disturbance.” - - because of their location.
