Prime Minister Stephen Harper will call for an emergency debate on the turmoil in Ukraine when Parliament resumes next week.
"We understand that this violence is occurring because the majority of the population is very worried about the steps taken by their government that very much remind them of their anti-democratic and Soviet past," Harper told reporters on his plane returning from Jordan on Saturday.
"The government of Canada very much shares the concern of the majority of the Ukrainian people,"when it comes to the "growing political conflict and violence," he said in a statement.
"We will continue to work with our allies and partners to determine what the necessary and the appropriate response to all this should be."

After six hours, troops leave Ukraine House peacefully - it's 4 a.m. there.
Great tweet from Euromaidan feed: "We showed the agents of our oppressors more dignity and compassion than they showed us." (not official, just a twitter follower)

VATICAN CITY—Pope Francis has called for ''constructive dialogue" between Ukraine's authorities and its people, urging all to renounce violence in the upheaval convulsing their country.
Speaking from a window of the Apostolic Palace in the Vatican to thousands of faithful in St. Peter's Square, Francis said he was praying for Ukraine, especially for those who have lost their lives in recent days. He appealed on Sunday for ''the spirit of peace and the search for the common good" to prevail in the eastern European nation.
"I am close to Ukraine in prayer, in particular to those who have lost their lives in recent days and to their families," Pope Francis said in his weekly Angelus in St Peter's Square.
"I hope that a constructive dialogue between the institutions and civil society can take place, that any resort to violence is avoided and that the spirit of peace and a search for the common good is in the hearts of all."

I don't like the idea of our government butting in there...
If there were violent protests in Canada, and our police had to resort to lethal force, I would hope that other countries would show us some understanding rather than butting in and condemning us. I think Canada should not interfere in this in any way, but that is my opinion about most international issues.

Anti-government protesters man a blockade in Lviv on January 27, 2014. Ukrainian police have arrested dozens of protesters who were trying to seize regional government headquarters in President Viktor Yanukovych's eastern heartland, local media reported on January 27. The reports said 37 protesters were arrested in Dnipropetrovsk, 30 in Zaporizhya, 12 in Cherkasy and 11 in Sumy following clashes with security forces that mirrored developments in the protest epicentre in Kiev.
