Is it too easy to pass our Canadian driving test? Let's compare Canada's process to that of Germany, a country known for its high-performance cars and the speed-limitless Autobahn.

Here in Canada, attending driving school is optional, but it's compulsory that all Germans attend Fahrschule, or driving school. Turns out, it's also much more difficult than ours.

Drivers must be at least 18 years old to attend school, and may only start after they provide proof of passing an eye exam, and complete an eight-hour “First Aid at the Scene of an Accident” course.

The prospective German driver is required to attend a minimum of 14 theory classes, followed by 12 driving lessons. These 12 lessons span different driving conditions, some through a city, some at night, and the rest on the Autobahn.

These 26 classes mean the average new driver spends about five months in school before they're even permitted to try passing the test.

Like our tests, their licensing test has two components: theory and practical. Unlike ours, theirs is more complicated.

Germany's tests are also multiple choice, but their questions can contain more than one correct answer. There are 30 questions, a perfect score is 90%, and anything less than 80% is considered a fail.

And the questions are much more difficult, for example: “on a holiday Sunday between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m., where are you allowed to park a trailer with a total mass exceeding two tonnes?"

The new driver must also be knowledgeable on environmentally-friendly driving styles, such as, “how do you achieve low fuel consumption and low pollutant emission?" or “if your vehicle loses oil, do you know how much drinking water can be polluted by a single drop of oil?” (answer: 600 litres.)

Then there's the in-car test, which is a 40-75 minute endeavour that, if not executed flawlessly, results in a fail. And if the test is taken using an automatic transmission car, the new licence will be marked that is the only type of transmission the new driver can operate, and the driver is prohibited from driving a manual vehicle.

The rate of failure is about 30%, and those who do pass are put on a probationary period for two years. During that time if the new driver commits even one minor violation, the two years starts all over again. And there's absolutely no alcohol consumption for anyone less than 21 years old.

Lastly, the process is much more expensive, with the average cost of becoming licensed around 1,500 Euro ($2,100 CDN), compared to an optional Young Drivers of Canada course cost of about $750.

Harder? Yes. More expensive? Yes again. But I like it, because of all the things we do, driving is one of the most dangerous, and there has to be something to Germany's methods if its drivers are driving at twice the speed, but with a lower accident rate.

Good morning, everyone. Hope everyone had a wonderful weekend of overindulging.

After 4 days of being spoiled, we're all in a lazy mood. Brats had no interest in getting up before 8am (late for spying on neighbours!), so we all slept in. The only thing I've done this morning is take the screen out in case the window washer pays us an unexpectedly early visit.

My Mom and I had a lovely Thanksgiving dinner at my friend's on Sunday. Everyone brought a side dish, so all my friend had to deal with was the turkey. We brought beets (well, someone has to eat them

) and non-traditional dessert (homemade apple strudel, believe me no one missed apple pie

). My contribution was to slice the apples (I wasn't about to say no when the expert told me to go slice apples and did all the rest of the work). There was lots of turkey left but most of the many many side dishes were polished off, so guess who will be eating turkey until it goes out of style.

Good thing I have roommates who are selfless enough to help me.

We got back late yesterday afternoon (had to make sure the turkey-shaped pb cookies were left for the neighbour pups), then hung out with the neighbours (they got some leftover apple strudel, well, I made sure there were a few pieces left over, so they could have a treat). I think they appreciated it more than whatever turkey concoction I could come up with.

Now, if only I can find a little ambition to get going this morning. Maybe I can blame the tryptophan in the turkey.

Cut-rate truck schools in Ontario are producing poorly trained drivers who put the motoring public at risk, a Star investigation reveals.

The Star found two dozen unregulated schools in the GTA that offer to teach students just enough to earn their AZ licence — required to operate a tractor-trailer with air brakes — and to clear new drivers with scant hours behind the wheel to operate a vehicle about 40 times heavier than a car.

These unregulated schools, called “licensing mills” by experienced truckers, thrive by exploiting a provincial loophole. They evade government scrutiny by charging $999 or less, just under the $1,000 threshold the province has set for regulated courses.

Tractor-trailer drivers are earning their licences at Ontario’s busiest truck testing centre without being taken on a major expressway, a Star investigation has found.

While car drivers travel on highways during their road tests, the Ministry of Transportation — which oversees all vehicle licensing in the province — allows tractor-trailer candidates to avoid being tested on highways with high speeds and merge lanes, where most trucking takes place.

Tractor trailers are the biggest trucks on the roads, hauling about 36,000 kilograms when fully loaded — the weight of two light armoured vehicles — to deliver everything from perishable food to dangerous chemicals across Canada.

Woodbridge is home to the province’s only licensing centre dedicated exclusively to commercial trucking. There, the Star watched more than a dozen people trying to earn a licence to drive a tractor trailer over a period of weeks. Not one of those drivers was taken on a 400-series expressway, even though the test routes steer drivers past the on-ramps of two four-lane highways — Highways 427 and 407 — just minutes from the licensing centre.

The Star also observed how Woodbridge examiners did not take tractor-trailer candidates on roads where the speed limit is at least 80 km/h, a ministry guideline.
