We also got rid of cable a few years ago, we get 17 stations with a large antenna and 12 if we use the small regular one. Roku with USTVnow adds all of the channels I want to watch and football for him for $20 month (they will probably have a black friday special if anyone wants to sign up) but without the sports and Bravo, you can get the 6 main channels for free with USTVnow too

Check this site below for FREE legal OTA HD uncompressed channels..using outdoor TV or even indoor TV antennae ..over the air , OTA

    http://www.saveandreplay.com

Depending on where you live, you can easily get lot of FREE over the air ( OTA ) channels including US channels.

Chromecast and Roku available for around 40 bucks should help you stream some online channels.

I cut the cable in the summer (usually out of town during that time anyways) and the savings really do add up. I bought Apple TV for the 1-2 shows I actually do want to watch. Cutting the cable wasn't hard at all and was done in one phone call. Apple TV, Netflix or watching shows online are all good (cheaper) alternatives to a heft cable package

I have tried to cut our cable many times, but every time I call Bell to do so, they talk me into staying. I wish I could just go on-line and click to cancel.

Let us know what you decide to do! Good luck.

If anyone does want a Roku stick for streaming - Walmart has them for $11 for Black Friday!

Have you contacted the loyalty dept with your cable provider?

Lots of people of unaware of the promotions that are on....you just have to ask otherwise cable will continue to bill full rate - I am referring to Cogeco loyalty dept. Worth calling to get a reduction....I did to get a great rate on telephone and internet.

If you really want to cancel, be assertive.

I am as agreeable any person as you will meet. But on the phone, dealing with companies, I have learned to combat the training that the "retention specialists" receive. This doesn't mean that you have to be cruel, or be a jerk, but stand for what you want.

They are not trying to save you money, they are trying to save them money by keeping you as a customer.

Before you call, mentally go over the ground rules to ready yourself. Tell yourself "I will cancel my subscriptions under all circumstances", or "I will cancel unless they offer to change my bill to be less than $X per month, and not just for 6 months (or whatever)". Temporary savings are temporary - that's delaying the problem, not solving it.

The problem is when they throw you a curve ball - you wanted to save yourself $100 per month, but now they throw in an extra couple of channels and offer to lower to $80. Do you really want those two channels? Does the $20 per month really make a difference? You won't be able to make that decision and carry on the phone conversation at the same time, and they know this. They are counting on this. Your only defence is to know what you are going to do in every situation ahead of time.

Be polite, but don't let politeness get in the way of getting your way. Be polite as long as they are being reasonable. If you can't make any headway, just say "I want to cancel my account now, please" to whatever they say. Don't stray from that - they know full well that people (and Canadians in particular) have problems saying "no" when asked a question. So don't answer their questions, just repeat your demand.

Don't let them bully you. You have the ultimate power - your money. Withhold it if necessary.

Also have USATVnow for streaming the major USA networks.
Where do you get the USATVnow streaming from? Is it online or through your box?

Next time tell them you are moving and the new address already has Bell and that you want to cancel your service. As Brunt posted above - you have to be assertive!

But don't feel badly - I too used to get them to talk me into staying....until they double billed me for long distance and I was pissed!

NetFlix might be a viable option for you, and far cheaper.
