My sleep situation sucks to put it mildly.
From insomnia and just not being able to get into a comfortable position to noisy neighbours, construction, heavy trucks, etc.
To top it off light comes into the bedroom from streetlamps. I am not allowed to switch up the curtains (housing regulations).
So I am considering ear plugs and a night mask.
Any tips, tricks, brands? This thread is currently associated with: N/AZoombucks are back: Please consider using my link to sign up again: https://zoombucks.com/?ref=IIHO0L

Are you able to put up a blind - one of the roller ones does a great job of room darkening.
Otherwise, if you don't mind it not looking great - put up a blanket or quilt over the window.
To block noise, I use a fan or cool mist humidifier, along with the radio on a talk station.
I haven't used earplugs, I don't think I could handle that because I have an inner ear disorder.
I hope you can find some solutions - I have insomnia, as well, so I know how tough it can be.

When I was in university I lived under the kitchen and so people with early morning classes would wake me up. I started sleeping with ear plugs in and slept like a baby. I used construction quality ones because they were the ones that I had but I actually had ones from Dollarama for a while. Just make sure you toss them on a regular basis or you'll end up with ear problems. I also used to use a simple eye mask from Dollarama and never had any issues with that. Hope you find some relief!

While I do take sleeping pills daily, ear plugs come in very handy for me when I'm travelling with my family. They are a bunch of snorers LOL As for a face mask, I've never had the need of one but wouldn't be adverse to using one if the light was bad.

Wow, so many of us using ear plugs +/- sleeping masks

For those with serious sleeping problems who don't want to do the sleeping pill thing -- i recommend a book/program called 'Potatoes not Prozac'. Author talks about using the relationship between protein and serotonin to help you get a good nite's sleep (that's this layperson's interpretation
). She has a web site - just google the title of the book - where she explains it but if you can get a look at the book, it's explained in there more completely and clearly, imo (although I have an old version of the book - can't find it at the moment though - and haven't visited the web site in years, so there may have been some changes).

I've used ear plugs every night since I started college. They do mess with your ears quite a bit so you need to replace them every month or two. I use orange squishie ones from shoppers.
I also use a fan for white noise probably 50% of the time, even when it's cold.

There's housing regulations that control curtains? Ack! My DS has had room darkening curtains in his room since he was a baby, makes sleeping in summer much easier for kids. Hope you find a solution! What is the curtain rule?

All the curtains have to match in the building for continuity reasons.
Turns out after having to call the police for noise the person in question has paranoia. The building has started the formal proceedings to have her move into assisted living(I live in low income housing).Zoombucks are back: Please consider using my link to sign up again: https://zoombucks.com/?ref=IIHO0L

So if they have to match on the outside, you could still put something over on the inside to darken the room.
Hoping your situation improves.

Besides ear plugs and night mask, don't nap, no matter how tempting it may be, an afternoon nap can make falling asleep at night even harder. "Extra" sleep on weekends can also throw off your regular sleep schedule and worsen midweek insomnia.

Why can`t you change your curtains? If the exteriors need to be neutral coloured, get black out fabric (opaque fabric that is still cream/white toned) from your fabric store and attach it to your currant curtains.
Can also try vitamins, melatonin makes you sleep.... or go the medical route and try a sleep aid.Last edited by Candini; Thu, Mar 26th, 2015 at 07:33 PM.
