Stag & Doe - help needed

One thing we did at ours that made a lot of money was members from our wedding party walked around with huge pickle jars with a picture of me on one and my now hubby on the other. Whichever jar had the most money in it at the end of the night was the "Winner" and got to throw a pie in the other's face. We made over $300 from the jars alone!

I wonder if its just a back east thing, because I dont know anyone that 'fundraises' a wedding. If you cannot aford it, time to change your plans. People are already giving you wedding and shower gifts, why should they also pay for a portion of your wedding.

And sorry if i offend anyone but I think its tacky as all get out to ask a company for a donation. There are enough real benifits and charitys trying to fundraise. Asking a store to give you stuff so you can raise more money for your dream wedding, means when someone comes in later that week asking for silent auction or raffle items, because they are fundrasing for cancer or MS or something could well be told no because their quota of free stuff was taken by a stag and doe person.

Please dont take it personal, I know many people do it ( not around here though) , it just don't agree with the 'idea' at all! And I have a feeling others are thinking what I am saying

Regarding donations, I must agree with you there. I've worked on many charitable committees and sometimes donations are as scarce as hen's teeth. And those groups were doing really important work and donations meant quite a lot to them, rather than just golf tournaments, for instance, that give prizes to people who can afford to buy their own crap. And I mention that only because my DH has gotten donations for golf tournaments and I just shake my head, wishing that some of those items would go to people who really need them. Donations mean so much to charities....I wish companies were more selective in deciding which groups they support through donations.

Just my 2cents...let the cream pies fly!!.....

I don't think it's exactly a 'back east' thing - the Maritimes are kind of East right?

Here in the Maritimes, I've never heard of fundraisers for a wedding.

But things are different in different places; in much of the US, you'd never dream of a cash bar, but it's common here.

This type of wedding fundraising is not done where I'm from, or amongst family/friends.
I just don't get it - as a couple you are adults getting married. You plan the type/style of wedding you want according to your own budget. A wedding can be fabulous at any price, people just have different circumstances, traditions, etc. I think at a wedding, the couple should be hosting everything for their guests - don't get me started on cash bars!
It's wonderful to have a shower(s) before the wedding, bach parties if wanted, and I think that is plenty.

I think Stag & Doe's are misunderstood by those who do not have them. They are very popular here!

Generally speaking a Stag & Doe is held INSTEAD of a shower. It is thrown by the wedding party (NOT the bride & groom). It's a way for everyone (men & women) to get together and celebrate but also raise money to help out with expenses. Most couples now already live together so they dont need another toaster. lol. And S&D's are usually more catered toward the younger or party crowd (ones that wouldn't want to attend a shower with old aunt besty - especially the guys. lol).

You can attend a Stag & Doe and donate whatever amount you want. To me it's really no different than going to a club. You pay $10 (or whatever the set price is) to get in. The only difference is the money goes directly to the bride & groom. There are usually a bunch of other activities that you can participate in or not (ie, silent auction, 50/50 raffle, toonie toss, etc.). Also for the $10 ticket you usually get entered into some door prizes.

Personally I love S&D's! They are usually a TON of fun! I'd much rather go to a party and help them out financially (by playing games etc) than have to try and pick a decent shower gift and hang out with the bride's family (most showers I've been to were super BORING). lol.

To me it's a win/win event. I get to have a fun night out with DH and hang with friends, possibly win a door prize, play games, etc. And I know my money is going to a good cause.

Oh and I should add that most stores will not donate to S&D's since they are not a charity. Most of the time the items are bought by the wedding party and/or families members. You would be surprised at how easily it is to make up a great gift basket (for door prize) when you shop at sales and use coupons. The last S&D I helped plan only cost each member of the wedding party $30 (10 in total) but raised over $2000 for the bride & groom.

Also: Weddings cost ALOT more these days than they did 25 years ago, and most people who are getting married are already in debt from their education. I think a party which brings people together to celebrate, have a good time, enjoy food drinks and prizes is a wonderful idea, and a great way to help the bride and groom out. I have been to a TON! I always love supporting the couple and see a lot of friends there.<o:p></o:p>
Also, you usually don’t have to "commit" to a stag and doe. there is no RSVP, so you can decide if you want to go last min with no pressure. Showers always feel so formal and its not like you can "drop in" - you have to come and leave at a scheduled time. S&D usually start around 7 and run until 1-2 with different guests coming and going throughout the night

They are a lot of fun! And a great way to support your friends and fam!<o:p></o:p>

stag and does are alot of fun , my son just had one ,he had 15 door prizes and didnt ask stores for donation it was all the wedding party and friends. I donated a bristal board full $50 worth of scratch tickets that went over well, i also donated 2 huge gift baskets full of our deals here on smart canucks, that i use my coupons for(ladies and a mens basket) plus stuff i picked up on clearance the year before(maple leaf clock for 5.00 bucks)so buy doing it ourselves we are not taking from charity. He also made enought to pay for their honeymoon

2 of my biggest things at our stag and doe was when we auctioned off a cream pie.....during the night someone goes around with a bride and groom jar and ppl will donate money to whom ever they would like to see get "pie'd" the largest donor gets the honor of throwing the pie LOL all proceeds go to the bride and groom....they surprised us at ours and we both got "pie'd"

The other game was a guess the cdn tire $ which was collected from all wedding party, family and friends we stuffed it in a lrg jar and sold tickets for $1.00 ....this was a huge hit and the prize was the jar of $ which was a great prize in itself

My fiancee and I are just in the beginning stages of planning our stag and doe and would appreciate and advice anyone has. I like what I have read so far but was hoping for more game ideas, prize ideas, anything?

My fiance's mom held a stag and doe for my fiance and I back in October. I will share as much information about it as I can/remember.

1) We weren't allowed to have 50/50 draws or sell tickets of any kind. This stems from the Lottery and Gambling Laws in Ontario. We know of someone who was fined because she didn't have a Gambling License during a stag and doe. Instead, what we did is include all the raffle tickets with the ticket to get in. When you showed up, you got an envelope full of penny sale tickets, for the toonie toss we used dollarama poker chips, there were a few booze tickets in there and tickets to the door prizes, etc. The only thing people had to purchase once in was booze. We sold tickets for $20/each.

2) For the toonie toss, we instead gave away a $100 gift card to the LCBO. You aren't legally allowed to give away booze or display it. We used a jug filled with water and a sign that said win the GC.

3) We did what others have said and raised money for a pie in the face. Our DJ helped us out big time with this by promoting it. There is a video of ME getting the pie from my fiance. I can link it off my FB if anyone wants to see it.

4) Our booze prices were $4/each for beer/hard liquor or 6/$20. Everyone opted for the $20 option. Premium beer (Corona, Stella and MGD as well as coolers were $5/each or 5/$20.

5) We had party mix at every table all night and also served sandwiches and cheese and pickel trays.

6) We sold Jello Shots for $2 each or 3/$5. Eventually, my fiance and her friends ended up selling shots from their clevage for $5 a piece and we ran out. To make the Jello shooters worth the $2 we replaced the 1 cup of cold water for 1 cup of vodka during the making of them.

7) We provided free rides home to anyone that requested them. I had a friend stay sober and we used my future sister in laws van to transport people. I had given my friend $100 to do this for me, which he donated back to me as he made $400+ in tips.

Thats all I can think of right now. We printed 300 tickets, 200 which were sold prior to the event and then the night of we ran out of tickets. We ended up charging 10 bucks to get in which came with two free drink tickets.

We probably had 350+ people go through. We were also very successful, making just shy of $9000 after everythying was settled.
