Winter is already in full swing in British Columbia


Most of Canada so far has been enjoying a relatively mild fall.Major cities like Winnipeg, Saskatoon, Ottawa and Halifax are all experiencing above-zero temperatures. If you live in Toronto, you’re actually about to welcome an afternoon high of 19 degrees–practically patio weather. But as you work your way towards the west coast, there’s a noticeable drop in the forecast. In fact, large swaths of B.C. are currently being pelted with snow. That’s right, snow. The dreaded post-summer “S” word. Thanks to a weekend snowstorm, mountain resorts like Whistler Blackcomb are reporting on Facebook that 35 cm of white powder has fallen since Halloween. The mysterious fog saw dozens of flights at Heathrow Airport cancelled on Sunday, while at least 45 have already been “pre-cancelled” today. Outlying U.K. airport Gatwick has also advised travellers to check ahead for any disruption, so it’s not looking good.
BBC forecaster Steve Cleaton calls it “radiation fog“: as land cools overnight, it cools the air close to the surface. Air is then less likely to be able to hold moisture, giving way for fog to form. Little wind and record-hot temperatures across England have also helped the fog appear dense by giving it less chance to clear. And the forecast for November is more of the same, with hot temps expected for at least the next couple of weeks.
