Pope meets Ukrainian president, shares commitment for peace


VATICAN CITY - Although the conflict between Ukraine and Russian-backed separatists continues, Pope Francis and Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko still share hope that a political solution can be found, the Vatican said.

Welcoming Poroshenko to the Vatican Nov. 20, the Pope greeted him in Ukrainian. Jesuit Father Federico Lombardi, Vatican spokesman, explained that at the age of 11, the young Jorge Mario Bergoglio learned a few phrases of Ukrainian when he served as an altar boy for a Ukrainian Catholic priest in Buenos Aires.
Pope Francis and Poroshenko spoke privately for more than 20 minutes. The Vatican said that their conversation was "dedicated principally to matters connected with the situation of conflict in the country."
"In this respect, the hope was shared that, with the commitment of all the interested parties, political solutions may be favoured, starting with the full implementation of the Minsk Accords," a ceasefire agreement signed in September 2014, the statement said.
Additionally, the two expressed their concerns regarding the difficulties in providing humanitarian relief and health care in areas of the country where the fighting continues.

“I received confirmation about His Holiness[praying] for Ukraine,” he said.
“This is exactly what we need now, because we need unity: Unity of the whole world, unity of Europe in front of the danger of the terrorist attack,” the President said, referring to last Friday’s shootings and bombings in Paris.
“We are shoulder to shoulder to our Paris friends, to our European friends,” he continued. “The same way we need the same level of solidarity, the same level of unity in supporting Ukraine in this very difficult time of the Russian aggression, and Russian occupation of the Crimea.”

Canadian Ambassador to Ukraine passes demining equipment to Ukrainian servicemen

On November 28, in Kamianets-Podilskyi (in the Khmelnytsky region), Mr. Roman Vashchuk, Ambassador of Canada to Ukraine, passed the demining equipment to the Ukrainian servicemen.


As reported by the press center of the Ministry of Defence of Ukraine, the Demining Centre of the Armed Forces of Ukraine hosted an awarding ceremony of Ukrainian EOD specialists who graduated from special course conducted by the Canadian experts.


“Today, we do not give a weapon, we give the equipment for ‘disarmament’,” Mr. Roman Vashchuk stressed.


These are safety facilities for civil population and servicemen. It is a material manifestation of our friendship, our solidarity with the Ukrainian people. The Canadian people show us their support in our struggle for existence, demonstrate their strong stance for democracy”, said Col. Serhiy Zubarevskyi, Acting Chief of the Centre, on behalf of the Minister of Defence of Ukraine and the Chief of General Staff of the Ukrainian Armed Forces.


Canada passed three TALON systems, fifteen EOD9 suits, and three telescopic manipulators. The ATO troops will receive this equipment soon.
As reported earlier, Canadian experts conducted training for Ukrainian instructors and simultaneously studied their experience gained in the area of anti-terrorist operation.

In the latest 24 hours, the illegal armed rebel groups in Donbas actively attacked only in the Donetsk city suburbs.
Spokesman of the Presidential Administration on the ATO Colonel Andriy Lysenko told a briefing on Tuesday

"Traditional the most attacked location in the ATO zone is western outskirts of Donetsk city. Yesterday in this front line sector random gunfire at the Ukrainian position began after 15.00, and with breaks, it lasted until midnight," he said.
Lysenko said that heavy weapons were not used, and a sniper opened fire at our troops in the city suburb of Maryinka.

Russia Has Not Withdrawn its Troops from Donbas, – NATO

NATO Secretary General Mr. Jens Stoltenberg stated that the situation in Donbas remains fragile and volatile.


“The situation is still very fragile. The RF has not fully withdrawn its troops, while Ukraine is still unable to control its borders. The number of cases of ceasefire violation increases”, – states Stoltenberg.

NATO Secretary General expressed support for a peaceful and diplomatic resolution of Ukrainian crisis. According to him, implementation of Minsk agreements is definitely the best solution.

“We also call on Ukraine to continue the overall reform process. It is vitally important for democracy, stability and prosperity “, – said the NATO Secretary General.

As Mr. Jens Stoltenberg earlier stated, Russia’s actions in Ukraine lead to new risks to security of the North Atlantic Alliance.
