Euromaidan PR ‏@EuromaidanPR 3h3 hours ago Militants fired 20 times upon Ukr troops over last day, many incidents incl use of harassing fire - ATO press center

(There is supposed to be a TRUCE - these young soldiers should NOT be dying!)

Oleksandr Koval, Azov warfighter and Svoboda member was killed outside Mariupol on Jan 1

Oleksandr Koval was 18. He went to war as a volunteer.
"Oleksandr was too young to go to war, but decided to become a volunteer soldier so that the future generations would live in a free country. He promised his mother that he would return alive but his destiny was elsewhere. The country is losing its best people. It's hard to accept especially when an 18-year-old boy, who is still a kid, dies," Svoboda party member Yaroslav Kohutiak said.

    Manitoba giving ambulances to Ukraine

The province of Manitoba will donate three refurbished ambulances to Ukraine as part of humanitarian efforts for the Eastern European nation still mired in conflict with neighbouring Russia.

Premier Greg Selinger and Ukranian Canadian Congress Manitoba president Oksana Bodnarchuk stood outside the Legislature Monday to make the announcement, which comes as part of the Ambulances for Ukraine initiative and with a $40,000 investment into repairs.

“This was such an obvious thing that we could do to support the people of Ukraine,” Selinger said. “We have local leadership that’s mounting this campaign. They’re buying a fourth ambulance themselves and we’re providing three ... so it’s a great partnership to supporting people that are in a very high need, that are being injured on the front lines of a conflict that’s taking lives on a daily basis.”

The ambulances would otherwise have been kept as back-up or sold off from the province’s fleet, Selinger said.

The province announced in September that it was investing in 52 new ambulances for its fleet, which, according to Selinger, gives the province the ability to donate the three headed to Ukraine.

Bodnarchuk said the ambulances are just five years old and still have a lot of value to those in Ukraine. She said her organization will be financially responsible for getting the ambulances overseas.

“The need is just as great as it was two years ago,” she said, referencing the beginning of the conflict. “They may say that there’s a ceasefire, but there isn’t. We get daily reports on people being maimed with land mines and active fire as well. Russia has not let up one iota on Ukraine and so people are being killed and people are being treated and the people in Ukraine are exceptionally happy to see these ambulances that are better than the ones in Europe.”

Saskatchewan and Alberta have already donated ambulances, hoping other provinces do the same.

    KREMLIN-KOLA?

Ukrainians launch Coca-Cola boycott after soft drinks giant publishes map recognizing Russian annexation of Crimea despite international sanctions over Kremlin invasion and annexation

Global soft drinks giant Coca-Cola has provoked anger and dismay in Ukraine by publishing a promotional New Year holiday map which recognizes Crimea as part of the Russian Federation. The map appeared on 5 January and came after an earlier 30 December version omitting Crimea had sparked a flurry of online protests from Russian social media users.

Ukrainians have reacted to Coca-Cola’s apparent acceptance of Russian claims to Crimea by calling for a nationwide boycott of all Coca-Cola products.

Coca-Cola officials moved quickly to defuse the row, removing the offending content and blaming the incident on an advertising agency that allegedly altered the map to include Crimea without Coca-Cola’s approval. In an official statement released on 6 January, Coca-Cola said: “We don’t support any political movements. The company has removed the post and apologizes for the situation.”

Instructing Ukrainian troops a wake-up call for Canadian soldiers

A fresh batch of Canadian military trainers is about to deploy to eastern Europe, and the outgoing commander says his soldiers took a lot of their own notes in addition to handing out assignments to Ukrainian troops.
Lt.-Col. Jason Guiney, who is about to end his five-month stint, says even though their training bases are 1,200 kilometres away from the fighting in the breakaway eastern regions, his troops have learned a lot about the nature of the conflict.

In dealing with Ukrainian troops, he said, they’ve had an up-close look at how Moscow-backed separatists have mixed high-tech Russian weaponry, cyberattacks, propaganda, conventional warfare and insurgency warfare into a toxic, deadly campaign.
“There’s a lot of very modern Russian equipment in there,” Guiney said, referring to armoured vehicles that have the ability to deflect anti-tank rockets.
“We’ve learned about how Ukrainians are deploying methods to defeat that.”

The mission, which is slated to go until March 2017, has allowed ordinary Canadian soldiers “and even senior (non-commissioned officers) to take this experience back to Canada with them.”
The first rotation of Canadians, from Garrison Petawawa, Ont., will slowly be replaced by a fresh batch of troops from CFB Valcartier, Que.
Up to 200 Canadian trainers are teaching regular Ukrainian army units infantry combat skills, battlefield medical treatment and how to defuse and dispose of roadside bombs. Separately, a contingent of military police is working in Kyiv mentoring counterparts there.
