19-year-old hero Vladyslav Makarov was laid to rest in Bila Tserkva, Kyiv Oblast on April 5, 2017.
Vladyslav was seriously wounded on March 2 near Avdiyivka and was immediately taken to Mechnikov Hospital in Dnipro. He survived a coma, amputation of both legs, and fought for his life along with a dedicated team of doctors. But, his heart and body gave out and Vladyslav passed away on April 3.

Vladyslav Makarov was born September 9, 1997 in Bila Tserkva, Kyiv Oblast. He served in the 3rd Mechanized Battalion of the 72nd Separate Mechanized Brigade. A young life of 19 years summarized in a few words: birth –high school graduation - war - death...
But during his short life, Vladyslav managed to carry out his mission: “He was a hero, a true soldier and a real man!”

Last tribute paid to ATO military doctor Bohdan Ryzanych in Ivano-Frankivsk

Captain of the Armed Forces of Ukraine Bohdan Ryzanych was killed in the anti-terrorist operation (ATO) zone on April 3

The 55-year-old soldier got a gunshot wound near Lysychansk in the Luhansk region. The circumstances of his death are still being clarified.

Today is Kvitna/Verbna Nedilya (Blooming/Willow Sunday, i.e. Palm Sunday). After the pussy willow branches have been blessed in church, people symbolically tap friends, family and passers-by with the branches for strength, happiness and health.

After the blessed willow is brought home, the branches are placed behind the icons hanging on the walls, to keep away unclean, evil spirits.

Oleksandr Dovhy was laid to rest in Pereyaslav-Khmelnytsky, Kyiv Oblast on April 5, 2017.
He was killed on April 1, 2017 near the village of Starohnativka, Donetsk Oblast. He was 31 years old...

Senior soldier Oleksabdr Dovhy was born August 1,1985 in Pereyaslav-Khmelnitsky. He graduated from the Pereyaslav-Khmelnytsky State Pedagogical University, where he studied social pedagogy.
Oleksandr was drafted into the Armed Forces on March 19, 2014. For a time he served in the local military recruitment centre, and then on February 29, 2016 was assigned to a military unit deployed in the war zone.
He leaves behind his mother, wife and 8-year-old daughter.

20-year-old Vitaliy Slautsky was laid to rest in his native village of Mykolayivka, Zaporizhzhya Oblast on April 5, 2017. His young life ended tragically at a checkpoint near Avdiyivka in March.

Vitaliy was born on July 6, 1996 in the village of Mykolayivka, Zaporizhzhya Oblast. The boy grew up without a father and provided for his family from a very young age. He was a kind and reliable helper for his mother and grandmother, and an example for his younger brother.
Vitaliy enlisted in the Armed Forces of Ukraine, signing a contract on March 10, 2016. His comrades remember him an open, helpful, friendly, and communicative young man who loved sports and fishing.
Vitaliy leaves behind his mother, younger brother and sister and grandmother.

Russia breaches international law forcing Crimeans to serve in occupying army

Nearly 5 thousand young Crimeans are to be conscripted into Russia’s army in 2017, with Russia thus openly flouting the UN General Assembly and the Fourth Geneva Convention. For the first time since Russia invaded and annexed Crimea, Crimeans will be sent to regions of the Russian Federation. Criminal liability and other measures have also been increased since April 1 against those unwilling to do such ‘military service’.

Article 51 of this Convention states unequivocally that “The Occupying Power may not compel protected persons to serve in its armed or auxiliary forces. No pressure or propaganda which aims at securing voluntary enlistment is permitted”.

Russia’s denial that it is occupying Crimea has been rejected by the entire democratic world. The Chief Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court issued a preliminary report on Nov 16, 2016, which found that the situation with Crimea constitutes an international armed conflict between Ukraine and the Russian Federation.

In its Nov 16, 2016 Resolution Situation of human rights in the Autonomous Republic of Crimea and the city of Sevastopol (Ukraine), the UN General Assembly explicitly condemns Russia’s occupation of Crimea and its application of Russian law in the occupied peninsula.

Options
The problem, of course, is that Russia will treat Crimeans who refuse to serve in a foreign – Russian – army as ‘draft dodgers’, or worse. Olga Skrypnyk, Coordinator of the Crimean Human Rights Group is aware that the options are few. If the young men haven’t received a draft notice, they can leave Crimea for mainland Ukraine and serve in the Ukrainian army.

Paratrooper Oleksandr Tretiak was laid to rest on April 6, 2017 in Dnipro. He was killed by a landmine in the Donbas on April 3. He was 27 years old....

Oleksandr was born in Dnipro on September 28, 1989. He graduated from high school No. 5, and pursued his studies at the National Metallurgical Academy of Ukraine.
He joined the Armed Forces at the very beginning of the war, in March 2014.
His family and relatives didn’t know he had enlisted. He first served in the 7th unit of the 25th Separate Airborne Brigade. He was discharged, went in for rehabilitation therapy, but after a while he returned to the army and continued to serve in 81st Separate Airborne Brigade.
For his courageous stance at during the battle for Luhansk, Oleksandr was awarded the medal “For Defense of Luhansk Airport”.
He was a true hero and patriot who loved Ukraine and his hometown Dnipro.

Maksym Svyrenko, fighter in the 55th Brigade, was laid to rest in Zaporizhzhya on April 5, 2017. He died near Avdiyivka on April 2. He was 30 years old...

Maksym was born in Zaporizhzhya on August 9, 1986.
Previously, he served in the 9th Operational Regiment of the National Guard and on September 8, 2016 he enlisted in the Armed Forces, serving as gunner in the 55th Separate Artillery Brigade.
He leaves behind his mother, wife and little daughter.

Donbas war refugee turns shrapnel into works of art to raise funds for Ukrainian army



Yevheniya Vasylchenko, originally from Volnovakha, a city in Eastern Ukraine which is on the frontline of battles between the Ukrainian and Russian hybrid army, and now a resident of the western Ukrainian city of Lviv, turns shrapnel into works of art. These “artistic fragments” are sold to purchase supplies for soldiers on the front lines.

East and West are united in the Ivaniv family. They have also joined their efforts against the occupation. Roman is active as a volunteer. He is from Lviv. Yevheniya is originally from Volnovakha. Roman brings pieces of shrapnel and empty shell casings with him on his return trips from Eastern Ukraine, which Yevheniya then transforms into works of art.

Roman and Yevheniya were married a month ago. A few days later, instead of going on a honeymoon, they left on another journey to Eastern Ukraine.


Roman describes his work as a volunteer, and how he has been making these humanitarian trips to the East for several years now. He buys and delivers items for the soldiers: everything you can think of, like socks and clothes and generators and spare parts for vehicles… and presents for young children in the surrounding villages for St. Nicholas Day.

Yeheniya describes one artwork by stating that “here on this piece of shrapnel I’ve portrayed a soldier, a man who is defending his family and is protecting them from the Russian occupation”.


There is a tenderness to the artwork that she paints, a sincere love that renews one’s strength to continue in this battle, and to fight for peace. Simply stated, Yevheniya has seen this Russo-Ukrainian war first hand.
