Ukrainian war photographer recreates imagery of iconic art masterpieces

Photos taken in the style of van Gogh, Delacroix, da Vinci and Rembrant go on display in the Presidential Administration of Ukraine

On the second floor of the presidential administration, in the heart of the Ukrainian capital, the photos are on display which were taken in the war-torn east of the country. The author is Youry Bilak, a French photographer of Ukrainian heritage.


Youry Bilak: "The inspiration of the project is art. I love painting and I love going to museums. I decided to take some very well-known painting and to use picture technology to turn photographs into art with elements of the warzone and people, soldiers, real-soldiers working and living in this place."

Ukrainians said last farewell to legendary fighter of "Peacemaker" battalion, the captain of the national police, Alexander Ilnitskiy (nickname Barney) today, on the Maidan. He died, bringing civilians from the shelling by Russian-backed forces near Zaitsev in eastern Ukraine.

2 Canadian Mechanized Brigade Group comes home

Starting January 10 and throughout the rest of the month, the first group of approximately 200 Canadian Army (CA) soldiers from 5 Canadian Mechanized Brigade Group (5 CMBG), based in Valcartier, Quebec, will be deploying to Ukraine for Operation (Op) UNIFIER. They will be relieving their counterparts from 2 CMBG, based in Petawawa, Ontario, who will be returning home throughout January, having completed military training activities in support of Canada’s response to requests for assistance from the Government of Ukraine.

Op UNIFIER is Canada’s military training mission to Ukraine. All training activities with the Ukrainian Armed Forces are coordinated with the Ukrainian Ministry of Defense and focused on increasing the capacity of Ukraine in order to assist in maintaining its territorial integrity and sovereignty.

CA soldiers are delivering vital training that will help to support Ukrainian Armed Forces in its efforts to maintain sovereignty, security, and stability in Ukraine. Roughly 200 Canadian trainers are teaching basic soldier skills, such as how to shoot, move and communicate on the battlefield, while also teaching how to treat wounded comrades and defeat threats such as Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs). Military Police members are working to build the capability of the Ukraine Military Police in their enforcement and investigation techniques. Flight safety training, English language training and logistics system modernization are also part of this mission.

Youngsters present traditional Vertep in modern Ukr context on occasion f St Melania holiday

Kyiv, January 13, 2016. On the occasion of the Saint Melania holiday, celebrated across Eastern Europe on January 13, students of the First Ukrainian Academy of Leadership presented a modern version of traditional Ukrainian religious nativity play “Vertep” at Ukraine Crisis Media Center. Students wrote the script and chose the costumes themselves. They performed traditional Christmas carols (kolyadky), kept all the traditional Vertep characters in the play but decided to set the play “in modern context”.


The play begins with a scene set in the combat actions zone. According to the screenplay Ukrainian servicemen start losing their faith in the possibility to win or at least to survive in this hell. When a bright (Christmas) star starts shining in the sky signaling that Jesus was born, the fighters take it for hostile missiles. But the Angel comes down to them telling them that this is “good news” and calls on them to “confidently follow the light of the star”. Three Kings – characters from the classic Vertep are presented as new heroes – the volunteer, the medic and the journalist. The Evil that opposes them also gained a modern form – these are all main “enemies” of the Ukrainian state including corruption, oligarchs and pessimistic moods in the society. A fight for people’s souls starts between the God and the Devil. The latter is convincing that people are only “killing, stealing, are tight-fisted, envying and hating” and never get better. However, the Savior is defending people and claims that they also “repent, give birth, make gifts, love, believe, fight for justice and respect freedom of others.” Defeated evil has to flee. Ukrainian soldier is citing the verse of a local writer Serhiy Zhadan, he is now sure that “this is not yet the end. Thousands of hearts are beating in the air. Each of them is incurable and warm. Each of them is beating for you.”
