U.S. Ambassador to Ukraine Geoffrey Pyatt says that the U.S. government has seen nothing so far that corroborates Russian allegations of a "Crimea incursion" by Ukrainian forces.

"[The] U.S. government has seen nothing so far that corroborates Russian allegations of a 'Crimea incursion' and Ukraine has strongly refuted them," he tweeted on Thursday.

In his words, Russia has a record of frequently levying false accusations at Ukraine "to deflect attention from its own illegal actions." The U.S. ambassador reiterated his country's position on Crimea's status.

"Our view on Crimea's status is well known. Crimea is, and will always remain, part of Ukraine," he wrote on Twitter. "We condemn and call for an immediate end to the Russian occupation of Crimea," he added.

According to him, U.S. Crimea-related sanctions will remain in place until Russia returns the peninsula to Ukraine.

Ukraine says Russia sends better equipped troops to Crimea border

Russia has amassed more troops in recent days equipped with more modern equipment on Ukraine's border with the Crimean region, which has been annexed by Moscow, Oleh Slobodyan, the spokesman for the Ukrainian border guards, said on Thursday.

"We can unequivocally say that Russian troops who were there since March are now being replaced with others," he told a briefing amid an increase in tensions between Moscow and Kiev.

"These troops are coming with more modern equipment and there are air assault units. In recent days, we see a strengthening of the units that are at the border. Their number increased," Slobodyan said.

Russian President Vladimir Putin accused Kiev on Wednesday of using terrorist tactics to try to provoke a new conflict and destabilize Crimea, which Moscow annexed from Ukraine in 2014. Russia said it had thwarted armed Ukrainian attempts to get saboteurs into the peninsula.

Cardinal Lubomyr Husar becomes the first laureate of the International Ivan Franko Prize



His Beatitude Lubomyr Husar, former head of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church was awarded a new international prize in the field of social and human sciences and Ukrainian Studies.

The International Prize named after Ivan Franko was won by Archbishop Emeritus and former Head of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church Lubomyr (Husar) as the author of scientific monograph “Sheptytsky, Metropolitan of Galicia (1901-1944), a forerunner of ecumenism,” published in Lviv in 2015. The amount of the prize fund is a half and a million UAH. (about 77,000 Can. dollars)


The prize winner was announced on August 5 at the University of Vienna. Representatives of the International Franko Fund reported that Lubomyr (Husar) won among the 14 nominees for the award.

The International Prize named after Ivan Franko, which in 2015 was established by the grandson of Ivan Franko, Roland Franko, confirms honorary recognition of scientific discoveries, significant achievements and merits of scholars in the social sciences and Ukrainian Studies.

The Ceremony of Award for Lubomyr (Husar) is scheduled to be held on August 27 in Drohobych. It wass reported by the Information Department of the UGCC

World champion power lifter Andriy Hurychev was killed during a reconnaissance patrol in Eastern Ukraine on August 5. Known as "Bars", he joined the army as a volunteer and was the commander of an intelligence team on the front lines.

Combined Russian-separatist forces attacked Ukrainian army positions in eastern Ukraine 52 times in the past 24 hours, including 23 times in the Donetsk sector, 20 times in the Mariupol sector and nine times in the Luhansk sector, according to the press center of the Anti-Terrorist Operation (ATO) Headquarters

Denys Lesnyak, born 1979, was killed during combat in Donetsk Oblast on 17.08.2016.

Denys served in the 10th Separate Mountain Assault Brigade. He leaves a wife and three children. Denys will be laid to rest in Poltava on August 18.

"The Pentagon has identified eight staging areas in Russia where large numbers of military forces appear to be preparing for incursions into Ukraine, according to US defense officials.

As many as 40,000 Russian troops, including tanks, armored vehicles, and air force units, are now arrayed along Ukraine’s eastern border with Russia.

Additionally, large numbers of Russian military forces will conduct exercises in the coming days that Pentagon officials say could be used as cover for an attack on Ukraine."

A decade later, the aborted exercise is arousing new interest: American diplomatic cables and Ukrainian prosecutors say the anti-US, anti-NATO protests that threatened these Marines were largely partisan plants, organized by politicians who consulted with Paul Manafort, now the prominent campaign aide to presidential candidate Donald Trump.


Manafort’s long-standing, lucrative relationship with the now-banned Ukrainian Party of Regions and its leader, deposed president Viktor Yanukovych, has been the subject of intense media scrutiny since his elevation as Trump’s campaign manager this past spring. But the Yanukovych camp’s key role in the Feodosia protests raises serious questions about whether a key aide to a would-be American president was aware that his foreign clients’ alleged actions may have endangered US policy goals – and US troops.

A memo leaked to the Times of London on Wednesday suggests Ukrainian prosecutors Manafort actively helped to foment unrest in the incident, one of a long line of provocations they say may have contributed to Eastern Ukraine’s secession from the country and Russia’s interference in the region, known as Crimea. The reason for the protests, prosecutors say, was to give Manafort’s clients a domestic political advantage. If that was the aim, they succeeded spectacularly.
