Youngest-Ever Ontario MPP In Nomination Battle to Run For PCs Next Election

The youngest-ever member of Ontario's legislature is to find out tonight if he will represent the Progressive Conservatives in next year's provincial election. Sam Oosterhoff, 19, was elected Nov. 17 in a byelection in Niagara West-Glanbrook, previously held by former party leader Tim Hudak. PC party members in the new Niagara West riding -- one of several being redistributed for 2018 -- will chose their candidate for the general election when they vote between 6 p.m. and 9 p.m.

Ottawa Doesn't Know How Much It Cost to Raise a Kid

A study says Ottawa doesn't have a bead on just how much it costs to raise a child in Canada, prompting some experts to wonder if politics and ideology are trumping evidence when it comes to social policy decisions. The paper, sponsored by the anti-poverty group Campaign 2000, says governments need a better way of measuring cost to ensure family benefits and anti-poverty initiatives are of help to those who need it. The cost of raising a child ranges from about $5,000 a year to more than $12,000, depending on which estimate one looks at.
