I Hate people on Kijiji!!!

I put something up on kijiji in the free section, within an hour I got 3 messages from 3 different people, all exactly the same. Same words, same punctuation, same sentences. Anyone else seen this or know whats up with this?

"Hi, I'm interested. Please contact me if this is still available."

On the kijiji app there is a quick message option and that's what one of the options is, hope that helps.

i found a kid's playmat posted on kijiji for $10 as "excellent used condition" so I did not bother asking about its condition. I stop by just after 5pm as per the seller's request, handed her the bill and took the mat without checking because I would never thought someone would lie about the condition of a $10 item. Came home and unfolded the mat, there were holes and indents all over. I was so disappointed, especially, I just gave away 3 large garbage bags of baby clothes from newborn to 2T to a stranger on kijiji. Why would someone sell such an item to a mom, who will be using it for her child?

Well maybe not "lied" but some people's perception of "excellent condition" isn't on par with several others. I've run into this a fair amount, on both sides of the transaction

When I'm buying, I always inspect the item, regardless of the price and/or item. I've had some people "not realize" that there were cracks, or loose parts, or flaws in their item until I point it out. (I used quotes there because I'm sure sometimes they DO already know, but might have been hoping I didnt notice.) And when I start identifying the flaws and imperfections and even perhaps the un-usability of the item in that condition, it's either time to negotiate on the price, or not buy at all.

On the other side of that transaction (when I am the seller) I prefer to be up front about the condition... right in the ad. If it is used, has scratches, dents, nicks, missing pieces, and/or the functionality isnt 100%, I say as much. I dont want to waste anyone's time (most notably mine) by meeting up and having someone refuse the purchase because they didnt know it was as "used" as it was. But on the opposite end, I have actually had people look at my item that I marked as "used" saying to me "it's like brand new!" (when in my mind, it's not even close) So it shows that their perception of "excellent" might be a bit lower than mine... and can sometimes be identified by the condition of their car, their clothes, their home, etc (not to be too judgemental of people's status, but we ARE discussing the perception of condition, which is entirely subjective.)

ALSO, when I'm selling, I insist that upon meeting that the person check the item. I suggest that they open the box, count the parts, etc. I dont want anyone ing at me (or about me) that what I sold them wasnt what they expected. OR that they somehow damaged the item between here and home, and then complain that is how I sold it to them. I can rightly say "you inspected it with me there before you bought it..." -- (Mind you, that's only happened once. On the way home, they smashed the lens of a camera that THEY they themselves looked through before buying it. So it wasnt cracked before purchase.)


Now, many many years ago, I used to deal in memorabilia items and looking for flaws and imperfections to de-value a sports card, comic book, sports collectible, etc is HIGH practice. (just watch any of those pawn-shows or 'pickers' on TV and you'll see what I mean) And while I'm NOT that nit-picky as those in that industry, I'm quite conscious and aware of the condition of things for sale.

Anyway, not discounting your method there at all, but I guess one should always exercise "caveat emptor" when dealing with people on kijiji.

I did the public place thing initially, but maybe one out of five people are on time. Tons of people will no-call, no-show. I'd rather be at home so I can actually get stuff done while waiting for them not sitting at a Tim Hortons with a coffee maker or pair of shoes for an hour.

Agreed that your and my time are both precious. However, I refuse to bring people to my home. Too many wack jobs out there that dont need to know where I live.

And I dont usually go into the establishment (ie Tim's) -- I'll tell them what car I drive, and where in the parking lot I'll be. If the item lends itself to an inspection and/or demo, then we can go inside together when you show up and I'll show you whatever it is.

As for waiting... I usually tell them up front that I'll wait a maximum of 15 minutes past the time, unless they call/text/email me to say they're running late, etc.
But with no notice or warning, if you dont make your time to meet, I'm not sticking around. I do this with first dates too...

They give me a date they will pick up but then when I send the exact address I get back oh your so far out of the way. The closest intersection I gave them is literally maybe a minute if that from my house.

We then play the game of oh I can't come that date now but I can come and then after rescheduling about 5 times they cancel. Grrrrr

Just skip the kijiji headache. If it is a headache for you. It is dangerous, time consuming and is it really a deal for all that headache? Dollar store, value village. Sometimes a deal is not alway a deal.

I love how people like to twist things. I am in a local buy/sell group which states you have to be in the area or deliver/pick up within the area. I am within the boundaries.

I had someone contact me wanting 2 items plus a price drop, okay that is fine they are a medium size item which is hard to store and I have posted for awhile so I agree to the price drop.

Next message "Meet me at _________________ Wal-Mart Sunday between 1 pm and 3 pm."

In my head "Whoa hang on I did not agree to deliver these items not to mention what is up with the 2 hour span."

Message "Sorry I do not offer delivery and I am unable to make exception this time as I have plans Sunday and would not be able to meet"

Next message "I do not live in the area and it is only fair to both of us that we meet at a mid way point, as it is I will be traveling further then you, so this is a better deal for you"

First off, I dropped the price, second even with selling both items this might cover half my gas to meet this person considering I have no need to be in that area on that day, third I am having work done on my house so need to be home this day.

My last message "I am sorry but as I stated I am unavailable to meet"

I also get a chuckle at people who think I'm DESPERATE to sell whatever it is that I plan on taking a loss (either in transportation, delivery, and/or price cutting). I;m not hard up for money... and more importantly, like yourself, I'm not in this to take it at a loss.

I'd rather hang on to whatever it is for another month or two than take a hit on it.

Background story:

I was recently in the USA, and the local Best Buy had just opened and put out 10 (and 10 only) SNES Classics.
(if you're unaware, this is a miniature version of the SNES from the 90s... with 21 built in games, 2 controllers, etc) --

They are hard to find, and a hot commodity right now.

So knowing of a few friends at home who expressed interest in them, I picked up a few. (They were limit 1 per customer... the friend i was with and I had to each purchase one, and we went another store who also had some and we bought 2 more... we broke no rules here, and we didnt hoard their supply).

As it happens, my friends back home didnt actually want them.

The turnaround:

So since my friends no longer wanted them... and being the the enterprising type that I am, I put them up for sale in Kijiji for $160... I figured I might as well make a few bucks and if I sold 3, well that would more than pay for the 4th one I could keep for myself.

Keeping in mind, I didnt scoop up local inventory here depriving the local customers of any... I brought these from away... and I didnt even scoop up all their inventory either.
That being said *IF* you could get one locally, they would be $100 + tax (in NB that's $115)... but you cant.
yes, I'm selling them for $45 more than one could get it at retail (I realize) but the fact is there just arent any around here... and when there are, they sell out in minutes.

Alas, I get bombarded by the "holier-than-thou" onlookers who claim I'm ripping people off, selling them for more than they are worth, yadda yadda yadda, etc etc.

I'm not selling stuff to take a loss... or to break even... I'm in this to make a few bucks. Whether I'm charging $160, or $260... or more (and some are trying) it makes no difference. I'm not forcing ANYONE to buy one that doesnt want one. No one has a gun to their head... and if I dont sell them, well I'm stuck with them, arent I?

The same thing happened to me. I was selling an item for $50 (retailed for $80) and I had someone email me that they got a better price on amazon, why was I asking this amount, etc. I was patient and a week later I found a buyer who was impressed with the excellent condition this item was and paid $50 no questions asked. I don't understand why some people feel the need to police items for sale.....if the price was too high in a store would you speak to the manager? of course not.
