Ukraine celebrates dawn of visa-free EU era
Ukraine's Berlin Wall moment: thousands in central Kyiv celebrating dawn of visa-free era. The dream of a European Ukraine closer to reality

The words “back in the USSR” would only be heard in a Beatles song, Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko said while launching a symbolic "visa-free countdown timer" in Kyiv June 10, the president’s press service said.
“This is a final “goodbye” to the Russian empire and the words “back in the USSR” will be heard only listening to Beatles,” Poroshenko said at a ceremony held outside the presidential administration headquarters. “We will never return to the Soviet Union because we, a proud and free democratic nation, are returning to the family of European nations. And I am proud that we have succeeded,” he said.
“I am Ukrainian and I love freedom! This is what every Ukrainian feels today,” the Ukrainian president stressed, adding that Ukraine has been going to the day of the visa-free travel introduction for a long time, with its people working persistently to change the country.

It will be Lithuania which will accept the first flight with a group of Ukrainian tourists and government officials within the framework of the entry into force of the visa-free travel, according to an announcement made during a joint press conference of Petro Poroshenko and his Lithuanian counterpart Dalia Grybauskaite in Kharkiv June 9.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine explained that the visa-free regime with the European Union will be enforced according to the local time of each EU member state after midnight on June 11.
the visa-free travel for Ukrainian citizens will apply to all EU countries, except Great Britain and Ireland, and will also operate in Schengen countries outside the EU: Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein and Switzerland. For visa-free trips, citizens of Ukraine must be holders of biometric passports.

Ukrainian citizens with biometric passports will travel to EU countries without visa for short stays of up to 90 days except for Ireland and the UK. However, visa-waiver does not grant Ukrainians the right to work in the EU countries.

Federal Government Eases Restrictions On Military Mission In Ukraine

OTTAWA — The military has quietly expanded its footprint in Ukraine, with commanders being given free rein to send their troops anywhere — except where they might run into Russian forces or separatist rebels.
Canadians were required to stay in the western half of Ukraine, far from the conflict that has continued to rage over the intervening two years, leaving more than 10,000 people dead.
Those restrictions were eased when the government extended the mission for another two years in March, the mission's commander, Lt.-Col. Mark Lubiniecki, tells The Canadian Press.
While Canadian troops are still required to stay away from the border with Russia and the fighting in eastern Ukraine, Lubiniecki says the rest of the country is fair game.
Lubiniecki says that change has added flexibility to the Canadian mission, which has so far trained more than 4,000 Ukrainian troops, many of whom have since been deployed into the conflict zone.
The training mission is set to expire in 2019.
