Mayoral candidates debate issues related to Toronto’s Black community

We’re less than three weeks away from the Toronto municipal election and last night mayoral hopefuls were talking policing at the latest debate hosted by a number of organizations within the black community. One of the candidates, Saron Gebresellassi thinks there should be a police hiring freeze in a bid to allocate more funding for job creation in low income communities, something incumbent Mayor John Tory thought was a little excessive. When it comes to transit, Gebresellassi suggested the service should be free. She went on to add a number of cities overseas have already piloted similar initiatives, something Jennifer Keesmaat quickly shot down.
