Avoid eating romaine lettuce in Ontario and Quebec amid E. coli outbreak, health officials warn
The Public Health Agency of Canada is warning people in Ontario and Quebec not to eat romaine lettuce as it works with U.S. health officials to determine the source of an outbreak of E. coli infections in the two provinces and in 11 states.
As of Tuesday, there have been 18 confirmed cases of the bacterial infection in Canada, the agency said in a notice posted on its website. Fifteen cases of the illnesses were in Quebec and three were in Ontario.
"Currently, there is no evidence to suggest that residents in other parts of Canada are affected by this outbreak," the notice said.
The illnesses believed to be associated with the outbreak began in mid-October and the risk appears to be "ongoing," the Public Health Agency of Canada said.
"Recent illnesses indicate that contaminated romaine lettuce may still be on the market, including in restaurants, grocery stores and any establishments that serve food," it said.
The warning includes pre-made salad mixes containing romaine lettuce.
Although no deaths have been reported, six people were hospitalized, the agency said.
Despite the current outbreak, neither the Canadian government nor the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) are issuing a formal recall of romaine lettuce.

Even though there is no recall, nor illnesses here
Caesar salads may be few and far between this week as romaine lettuce has been pulled from grocery shelves across Saskatchewan.
The Public Health Agency of Canada issued a warning for people in Ontario and Quebec not to eat romaine lettuce because of the risk of E. coli.
Most grocery chains have voluntarily yanked romaine and products that contain the lettuce from their shelves right across the country.

Sucks my wife just bought a 6 pack of them from Costco on the week end. Unfortunately we have already used one of them so not sure if we can take them back and even if it is worth it because it is a bit of a drive from where I live
Just phoned them and I told them that I had already opened the package and that I would not be able to get up there until atleast the weekend. Without hesitation she told me to just throw it in the freezer and the next time you come in just bring it back.
Don't throw it out, take it back.
Not a lot of money but I know we will be going back there anywaysLast edited by Thatdone; Wed, Nov 21st, 2018 at 05:08 PM.

Just got an email -had bought romaine from Superstore a few weeks back.
Email had more info, plus a link to the recall
Out of an abundance of caution, Loblaw Companies Limited is recalling and removing from store shelves across the country all romaine lettuce products, as they may pose a risk to the health and safety of customers. You are receiving this notice because our records indicate you purchased affected product.

I'm currently in the states and was at an olive garden, they had signage up saying there's a nation wide warning on romaine lettuce so they could not serve their salad.

I heard a health official give the info today that it is really important to clean and sanitize any container in which one may have had the romaine and ALSO to thoroughly clean and sanitize the crisper drawer in your fridge, or the shelf where the lettuce was kept.
