H&R Block specialists are given minimal training and use a computer program to do the taxes. With a bit of patience and time you can do your taxes yourself. If you have special circumstances (ie Business owners, newly retired(income splitting), etc. )than you should go to a tax accountant (at least for the 1st time) so you know that your taxes are done correctly.
Totally agree!! Quick Tax is wonderful leads you through everything!

I agree, we have our business accountant do ours and there has never been a discrepancy (although we did have someone from Revenue Canada come to us not long after we opened the business to talk us through all the things to look for in an accountant and she checked what we were doing at home - it wasn't an audit, they didn't go over numbers, just said make sure you do claim this and not this etc)

Yep, we use Ufile.ca too. It's so simple, We Really like it. Doing it with paper and calculator is way to confusing for me and Doing your taxes anywhere else costs too much.

Sorry to here about your problem, i use to have my own company, and would pay someone to do my taxes, never had any problems with my returns. Seven years ago i sold the company and started working for someone else. I still took my taxes to someone to do for fear i would mess them up myself.( IT cost $70.). I always got money back, around $ 400 a year. Three years ago i took them to H&R to see if they could do a better job, i was wrong, i only got back around $ 100 and it cost me $ 89 to have them done, i could not figure out why so little being nothing had changed from the last few years with the amount of money i had made.
The last two years i have had a freind help and show me how to do them myself. It took a little while but i did manage to do it. I allways send a note in my taxes that i have done it myself, and please check for any credits that i have missed.
Last year i thought i was to get $ 520 back and ended up with over $ 700, i was pretty happy. This year i figured it to be $ 680, so i hope they find some more for me.
I know my taxes are straight forward, and others are more complicated, but if you get the chance to find someone that will help you out, you can save a little money.
The H&R that i went to was in Listowel, Ontario. I will never use them again.

Glad I decided not to use them. I thought about it because this year our taxes are so complicated this year. I used quicktax instead. The only problem with quicktax is that it is only as good as the user! I think it's easy to miss stuff (I did until I coworker mentioned a northern deduction I was entitled too). At the same time who wants to spend $200 for a family's taxes?

I would check, I too thought that they guaranteed their work. They should pay the difference (and then use the money to buy a software and compare the results!)

You don't send it to them, but make sure you keep your slips. Not entirely sure for how long. I think it's past 5 years. They can always go back and ask for them.

They do not guarantee their work, but here is how it works. If H&R Block screws up and you owed more money than expected they will pay any interest charged as a result of their mistake. You will still have to pay their fee but they might give you a frew tax return for the following year, hoping to win back your business but that doesn't work for many people as they no longer trust them.
If you feel they did not do the right job you can take it back and ask for a senior person to review it for free and see. They can always resend the information and get you more money if you are entitled. This you do not pay for, it is a part of their Block guarantee.
All in all big waste of time and money to go with them. They are severely overpriced and charge you $15 per dependant you have which is all of two boxes to fill out on the tax return. And for every investment slip you have is at least another $15.

H&R Block is so unprofessional!! We will never go to them again to do our taxes.

    This is the reason...

We filed our taxes a few weeks ago and the person that was going our taxes was so unprofessional. He kept on messing up our files by putting my info. into my husband's folder. So we had to correct him so many times. Not only that, he took forever to do our taxes!! It took almost 2 hours! I couldn't believe it...it should of taken less time. It just seemed like the "tax specialist" was so clueless. Ah wait...these are not our big problem. So after everything is done, he tells us that they do not give out checks anymore, they now give out debit cards. So he tells us..."debit cards are more convienent and the cheques that people get last year was getting charged for cashing out". OMG, that's a lie. My husband got back $2001.57...he could only take out $1000max at the ATM machine and charged $1.99 transaction fee and $1.50 fee for using their card. So he's left with $998.08 on the card. So he took out $980 cause he could only take out $20 denominations. By taking out $980, he was charged the $1.99+$1.50 again!! Well now he's left with $14.59....so we used the rest on groceries...not $14.59 because it cost $1.50 to use the card everytime. Hmmm so all together it cost my husband over $8.00 just to cash out. And that's just my husband's. It cost me almost $5 fee to cash out. You may think this isn't a lot of money, but we're getting ripped off. We had no problems before with the cheque and now they tell us that the debit card was more "convienent"? I felt like we were being scamped. It's ridiculous!! Well, we won't be doing our taxes there anymore. The cost of filing our taxes was expensive already, but they just had to take more.

According to this, there should still be the option of cashing out to a check.

    http://www.hrblock.ca/services/benefits.asp

The whole debit card thing is a scam, aimed to take advantage of those who financially can't wait to get their refund back, such as the low income individuals.

Those who have direct deposit set up with the CRA should avoid the cash back option and just wait for the gov't to process their refund. If the return is electronically filed, it should take no more than two weeks for the funds to show up in your bank account.

we did our taxes there 2 years ago and the lady didn't check to see if i owed any money to the government... gave me my cheque and then a couple months later i got a thing in the mail saying that i owed the government 130.00 and that i had to pay H&R block back the 130.00 that they gave me... ugh
