My fiance does my taxes, his, and some of his friends. One of the things many people don't realize is that once you get the quick cash from your income tax return, the company is able to go back and re-adjust the taxes again. This can result in the tax company getting a much bigger return than you, the customer, receive. There was about $1,500 difference between H&R with quick cash and when Cameron did the taxes for our friend. I don't recommend them.

I agree. Although we don't get ours back quite that fast, an accountant is much better at claiming amounts for you that H&R Block wouldn't bother with. An accountant, believe it or not, works out cheaper in the long run and files a more accurate return for you.
Example: our accountant charges $85 to e-file for both my and the Mrs' returns, with children. If our return amount were to equal say $1000, then minus the accountant fee, we've got $915 in our pockets.
If we were to use H&R Block, who usually claim 25% of your return, not only might our return be less (they would not be as thorough as our accountant), but our return would only be $750.
To me, that's worth waiting a week or two extra for my money. Plus, we've had no unexpected "adjustments" by the government on our returns when our accountant does them. He's an awesome guy.

I can tell you again from experience there that yes the debit cards might seem like a scam but for some people it is not. It is in fact cheaper for people to do their taxes through the cashback option because the fee for cashback or debit is federal gov't regulated, so whether you go to the Block or Libery or Softron it is the same price. So for someone who would normally cost $200 for the Block to do their taxes could get it through cashback option for $60 if you qualify. To qualify means you have to come up as not owing anything to the gov't or have a history with them (they do this kinda check on your background with the gov't online and they have the rights then if you sign off to do this at any time throughout the yr) and if you have a very simple return they will do it. Reason being if it is difficult and something screwd up on the return and you owe the gov't...well they just gave you the money up front and you do not have to pay them back...they send collections to you but most don't pay it back because they feel they screwed up so too bad.
There are alot of people that this does work for, I know they mentioned some of the lower income communities (I was trained by the Jane and Finch manager at one point in Toronto) and she said alot of people in her community do not have bank accounts so to get the check just was a hassle for them. Most people get back an avg of $800 so they will take the card and go shopping with it and pay one transaction fee.
And btw you were lied to because they can do the cheques still this year if the customer absolutely requests it, they just do not want to because they get a commission for every cashback card handed out...also if they get your email address

Monkeymommy you can go back and have any accountant check your return for that year. I think you have 5 or 7 years to go back on. Or even go to H&R Block and they guarantee their work so ask a senior specialist or manager check that return and find out why you owed so much if you never have in the past. It is a part of their service and free. And if they screwed up and you get money back, they owe big time

I will NEVER use H&R Block ever ever again, my taxes are so straight forward a student could do them. I used H&R Block for 5 years straight and was assessed every single year. I was always of course over paid recieving returns of $800 and more. But then would recieve notices that I was assessed and owed some of the money back. The last year was the final straw as they made an error and put that I was single which I wasn't legally classed as single I was classed as seperated and I tried explaining this to them but they wouldn't listen and put what they wanted. I ended up having to pay the government back alot of money and it messed our benefits and my ex's unemployment checks and my child tax credit for a few months until it was all straightened out, the government automatically stated we were together instead of seperated. I have been doing my own for three years now and not a single issue.
