i know this isnt a store but i am going to review my experience here anyways since this is the time of year many of you might be considering going to H&R BLOCK to have your taxes prepared and i just want to share my experience so you could think twice.....
let me say that i know very little about tax preparation but i usually do my own taxes at home with a pencil and calculator. but since everyone else seems to be getting good money back i assumed i am missing out on something and i should get a professional to do them this year. NEVER AGAIN.
first off i asked how much it was going to cost and they wouldnt say, said they have no idea until its all done. how can i decide if i have enough money to pay for it if i dont know how much it is going to cost?? in the end, mine cost $88 and my husbands was $110 (way more than i wanted to spend-really had no idea how much they charge, now i know...) PLUS they said that they had prepared my husbands taxes back in 2003 and made a mistake and he owed them $90 from then, so we actually ended up paying $290! i was very upset about that!
when it was finished they told me that my husband could expect to recieve $500 back and i should recieve about $50 back. fine.
today i recieve my notice of assessment from the government. my husband recieves a cheque for $490 and i get a bill for $421!!! WHAT?!?
i feel totally ripped off! the whole procedure took over an hour and a half, with a 2 year old and a 3 month old-NOT FUN!- cost me $300 and now i get a bill from the gov for $421 when i was expecting a cheque for $50? what did i pay all that money for??
from now on i will be doing my taxes myself at home for free.
anyways, i wrote them a letter explaining my displeasure at the whole experience and we shall see what they say, if they even reply. This thread is currently associated with: N/A

H&R Block is very overpriced. We had our taxes done by them for 2 years and both times there were errors done.
Last year I did our taxes using UFile and we got more money back than compared to those two years with H&R. So I'm never going back to them. I'm not gonna use their software either.Blog: The Mommy Diaries

What was the reason given for the change? I would look at the break the CRA gives you and see where H and R went wrong and go from there.

ok I trained there and spoke on another forum about H&R. Horrible service. They train people for a few months and pay them minimum wage to handle very delicate information on people. Identity theft is huge maybe for that reason. You need to go to them and get a refund for the tax preparation for their mistake. Any interest you have to pay as a result of their mistake will also be paid by them and they might even throw you in next yrs free tax preparation.
It is a horrible place to get your taxes done, they would rather people look or pretend to be professional than be properly trained to do someones taxes accurately. It is a part of their training process.

I wont ever go back there ever.
They made so many mistakes in my taxes I ended up bawling my eyes out in the office and refusing to pay because It was done wrong.
They held my t4's 'ransom' for weeks until I complained so much they released them to me.
They treated me like a piece of crap when I disputed that he had prepared my taxes wrong.
They said I owed a ton and I KNEW I was getting back well over 1000$
Finally when I got my T'4's back I went to my dads friend and sure enough I got back what I thought and I DID NOT owe.
They are not professional. I don't know about all branches but here to be an H&R qualified specialist all you have to do is take a quick course and your a ''tax specialist''
I do believe you can go demand your money back if they filed your taxes wrong, I do believe its in a guarantee they have or something.
Anyways, I wouldn't recommend them to anyone, even if you want your money right away your better off just to netfile and wait the 1-2 weeks for your refund.

i only got the assessment in the mail today but i do plan on going down there with it and demanding an explaination for the huge discrepancy!
i am hoping to get my money back, if they offered to do my taxes free next year i wouldnt even take them up on it! and this guy didnt even look/act professional, the whole time i was thinking "does this guy know what he is doing???" apparently he did not!

Use U-File or QuickTax...much better and very user-friendly.
H&R Block specialists are given minimal training and use a computer program to do the taxes. With a bit of patience and time you can do your taxes yourself. If you have special circumstances (ie Business owners, newly retired(income splitting), etc. )than you should go to a tax accountant (at least for the 1st time) so you know that your taxes are done correctly.
