So, my 3.5 year old DS has adored Curious George since he was 18-ish months....in particular, a stuffed George doll, that he took EVERYWHERE, and absolutely couldn't sleep without.
We ran into problems last November, when George was lost on a trip to town. I paniced and had to have my SIL ship a new one via Greyhound from Grande Prairie. Well, I found the old George this spring in the ditch near our house one day after the snow melted...long story short, George must have been dropped on the way to the car, was then abducted by coyotes (or some other savage beast), needless to say, he wasn't in great shape when I found him (okay, his face was chewed off and he was missing several pieces of his anatomy). So I chucked poor George in the back of my SUV and pulled into the yard...as I was taking groceries into the house, George fell out of the car and my poor, poor DS saw his bestest friend in a very sad state, and ran screaming into the house. I had to reassure him that HIS George (new George) was safe in bed, and poor mangled George belonged to another little boy. Oh how I cried (about George). Eek...so, after scarring my poor kid for life, everything went back to normal.
Now, we've moved into a new house, where he has his very own big-boy room (for the first time ever), complete with new bed and everything...and he's saying now that he is too big for George and doesn't want him anymore.
Its breaking my heart, and I don't know what to do...I think I'm sadder for George than for Gabe (because everyone knows that teddy bears have feelings too!)...so do I just put George away...will he grow out of this and want him back someday? Argh. So conflicted.

I think you should just stuff him in a drawer somewhere. I'm sure he will be needed/asked for some day.

Poor George! LOL I bought two more of my son's fave dog, just for moments like those. I switch them around when I wash them so they all get equal wear.

I'm sorry, but my DH and I just had a good laugh over poor, mangled George. I can only imagine your DS's reaction to see his beloved toy, mangled by wild beasts!
My DS has as dog named Spunky (according to his tag). He sleeps with Spunky most nights, sometimes will wake me up at night calling me to find Spunky, but mostly he's not dependant on him.
If I were you, I would save George. He may not really be done with him, and even if he is, it might be amusing to pull him out 15 years from now.

my kids (3 lil girls) never had a toy or a blanket they cherished or were inseprable with...
I wish they did! lol... they look so adorable carrying around their fav teddy or blankie!...
I remeber once my 2 year old washed ALL her stuffed animals in the sink! and didnt even tell me about it!, i found them all soapy and soggy in the corner of her closet after smelling something "weird" in her room for days, i went for a hunt... and VOILA!..
i asked and she said. they got dirty, they never have a bath time !

Awww. Don't worry, your son will want to see his George again some day. I'm in my 20's and my dad still keeps "Winnie" (named because I won him.. so creative) my old blue bear that he's had to sew in the head, crotch, and arms. It's missing it's eyes and nose and some fur because of an ironing accident, and has a faint smell to it. The point is, I still love my Winnie. I don't carry it around with me or sleep with it, but it's nice to have it tucked away somewhere to remind me of my childhood. I think your son would love you to keep George safe for him.
Marriage is a wonderful institution, but I'm not ready for an institution yet.

I still have my first doll toy when I was brought home from the hospital, it too was destroyed, but by another little girl down the street. I got attached to another stuffed toy (a bear named bear). I still have him, he's still on my bed. I'm that cool. But I only ever need him when I'm sick or upset (needed him badly when I broke my foot in June :/)

Awww your story made me cry! Definitely keep him somewhere, I kept my favourite stuffed animal right up until I got married (then I replaced it with a different kind of "stuffed animal" bwahaha)
For a long time, my 2 year old son had a favourite stuffed bunny. We lost it at a convention this summer
Thankfully, he didn't miss it, just moved on to another stuffed animal. But I miss it!! I loved that raggedy bunny!!!
We want to take him to one of those places where you pick out an animal and they stuff it.....so I am going to make sure he has that stuffed animal everywhere with him, in hopes he will get attached to it LOL<center><embed src="http://www.widdlytinks.com/myfamily/silhouettes/silhouettefamily.swf" flashvars="t1=The Bernard Family&pv1=0&pn1=6&px1=251.55&pf1=1&pv2=0&pn2=22&p x2=186.8&pf2=0&pv3=0&pn3=12&px3=305.85&pf3=1&pv4=1 &pn4=9&px4=278.8&pf4=0&pv5=1&pn5=3&px5=226.8&pf5=1 &pv6=0&pn6=1&px6=102.8&pf6=1&pv7=1&pn7=24&px7=317. 8&pf7=1" quality="high" wmode="transparent" name="My Family Silhouettes" allowscriptaccess="samedomain" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" pluginspage="http://www.macromedia.com/go/getflashplayer" align="middle" height="230" width="500">

Aw, the poor George - and I love the other stories.
Just a note from me with a son who graduated grade 12 this year. They had a retreat in the fall, and one part of it was they had to bring something symbolic of their early childhood and explain what it represented for them now.
So, that was the time to pull out the stuffies I saved!!! (just a few, washed, in ziploc bags, in a rubbermaid container)
He chose to take with him a small blue mama bear whose arms went around a baby bear and attached with velcro around the little bear's tummy. My mom had given it to him.
He said he chose it first because it came from his Baba (grandma), and he had only known her for four years - but that she knew I would be a good mom and always hold her son closely - so for him, it meant both generations, which was cool.
So save a few stuffies! And a few other things, too! You never know what will be sentimental down the line.
