Yesterday for supper I ended up using a pack each of ground beef and pork, and made Sarma - the pic is what they are 'supposed' to look like, but I find buying sour cabbage to wrap the meat mixture in is too expensive, so I use sauerkraut instead (don't tell Vee!). Made a big pot, so we'll have the rest of it today for supper.

You mix up a bit more ground pork than beef with salt, pepper, garlic, minced onions, paprika, one egg, and about 1/2 raw white rice.
Make into rolls and balls (normally you would roll them in the sour cabbage leaves like cabbage rolls), put in boiling water, simmer for a while, then add 1/3 big jar of sauerkraut, a can of tomato sauce - overall need to simmer for about an hour and a half.
We had it with fresh bread - and it's SO yummy!
It was like my brain had no " off " switch!! Just kept lifting the fork up to my mouth!!
my favorite cabbage is this one:

I dont know what its called...we usually call it lebanese cabbage cause we buy it from the lebanese grocer LOL
The leaves have a meaty texture but melts in your mouth...I am always buying these so my mom can make them for me. Same with grape leaves (dolmas), we use the same stuffing as the cabbage rolls and use fresh leaves (they grow everywhere!) the jarred leaves taste like rubber.
So I ended up making chili yesterday....and tried sour cream on top...DELICIOUS! How did I ever eat it without...:)
scaredasyou, my husband is the same way, but he'll eat it if I cook it!
The Sarma is from his ethnic background, he taught me how to make it. We're both Ukrainian, but he's from Eastern Europe (he's Ruthenian, which is just Ukr. from a different region). He's not such a fan of regular cabbage rolls, since I usually make mine meatless.
Tonight will be deli pizzas from Sobey's (they are SO good and when they are on for $6, I can't make them that cheaply and they are so much better than frozen ones). Will make two salads to go with - garden salad, and broccoli/grape salad. Actually, the latter ends up kind of being like a 'dessert' because the dressing is sweet!
tonight is just me for supper so a cup of coffee and maybe kd
Homemade veggie pizza for us :)
BBQ tonight - burgers and crudites.
Steamed fish with sauteed vegetables! Healthy! :D
Whatever my mother is making as I am going there for supper!
I will bring some wine though!
We are having chicken fajitas tonight made with boneless chicken breast and peppers. Yum :)
