Since I am new to SC, can someone please tell me how the Shoppers Points work? Is it worth collecting them?

SDM Points has been rated one of the best points systems. It is definately worth collecting if you shop there enough. Especially on bonus days should as refer a friend event, 20X the points and redemption days. You can find most of the information on shoppers website. They have a whole section explaining there rewards. Basically you get 10 points for every dollar you spend.
Get 10 points when you spend $1.
Get 100 points when you spend $10.
Get 500 points when you spend $50.
Get 1,000 points when you spend $100.
And to redeem your points when you go shopping.

It's worth it if you collect points during bonus points events, otherwise it takes a while to accumulate points, unless you shop there regularly. I like purchasing products that give you bonus points and redeeming during bonus redemption days too.

In most cases, sdm points are only worth collecting if there is a bonus 20X or referral promo going on or if the item is on sale. Otherwise their regular prices are too inflated (ie when compared to stores like walmart) to make it worthwhile.

Its also worth it if you get your prescriptions at Shoppers and your store allows points for prescriptions as you get points for the full cost of the prescription before insurance payments cut in.
Not all provinces participate in points for prescriptions though so you should check with your store.

I would also recommend optimum program. No other point program excits me like this one. I too was surprised to hear of them cancelling it. Where can you read about the terms and conditions.

It's especially good if you have prescriptions that are paid by insurance. You still get the full amount of points on the value of your meds, even if insurance paid for all of it. Air Miles don't get you nearly as far.
You can also share points between family members, etc. If I need them, I take my mom's and my MIL's points, share the proceeds with them. My husband has a card only because he gets prescriptions there too, so I take his points and put them on my card regularly.
I've cashed in for $150 in free stuff several times. I LOVE free.
