As in pogacsa? Those scone-like things with bits of bacon (well, some facsimile thereof)? LOVE em, traditional for New Years for us. But I get my Mom to make em yr round.

For us, anything pork is traditional for New Years eve. I usually have pork sausage & my folks have this jellied pork dish that I'm not overly fond of (kocsonya).

We're not ambitious enough to make hurka (my parents are city people, although my Mom did spend a few years on her grandmother's farm during WW2). The Hungarian Catholic church here has fundraisers every few months where they make & sell hurka, so we get our supply there. The money actually goes towards the restoration of 500+ yr old churches in Hungary, so it's a good cause.

Do they make majas or veres hurka?
& for those curious, it's sort of like sausage. & very yummy if you're a carnivore like me.

Just saw an interesting doc. on Passionate EYe about dog breeding in Britain. It seems that the best interests of the breed are not the top priority for The Kennel Club. Shame on them for what they are doing to these poor dogs in the name of beauty. Apparently it's no different here.

Have you guys been checking out the early Boxing Day flyers? Maybe it's just me but not much excitement out there. I guess I am spoiled.

One on the right loves anything human ( pasta, tomatoe sauce, jello, tacos butter chicken, Csirkepaprikás and harka and more), the other one needs to see the cat on the package.
Do you guys make Dobos Cake for birthdays and special events?Last edited by YesI'mcheap; Sun, Dec 20th, 2009 at 09:54 PM.

the neatest thing today! my mom had a cashier at Superstore that was most interested in the great coupons she had! lol she was supposedly quite amazed by the deals my mom was getting! lol well my mom of course spread the word about this amazing site that her daughter (me) is on and the cashier supposedly repeated back smartcanucks like she was trying to remember the address. so I said to my mom that she made a new convert! LOL well that sounds odd tho but technically true! oh then at Shoppers when I was getting out the one coupon for the Ocean Spray cranberry sauce my mom mentioned I am into coupons and the cashier was like she is too and we got into how great coupons are! then we got into cards and how you can have so many cards that it is difficult to find the one you are looking for.... in case you are wondering-places were not very busy today! I was surprised. the weekend before Christmas and places not very busy.

Kiera opened her stuff. My dad got her that bear. He didn't realize how big it was.

There's kind of a funny story behind the bear. I saw it at Walmart $24.95 and thought wow super nice but where the heck would I put it? So I passed on it. Then my dad went to WM and saw it. He came back and said I should get it for her because I had a big teddy(not that freaking big) when i was young etc. I said I thought it was too big but I would pick it up if he let her keep it in his room. LOL Right. So a few days later I went to get it and put it in a big green garbage bag in the garage. A couple of days later my dad says to me he picked up the bear and put it in a big green garbage bag in the garage. I said right next to the one I got? We just kind of looked at each other. So much for great communication skills. I took one of them back and got something else. It is very big but don't forget Kiera is pretty tiny, just 38" tall.
